BE BRAVE AND COMMENT ON THIS ISSUE | BELLAGHY BAWN | FUTURE PLANS OR A PIPE DREAM | YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE
It is hard to miss Bellaghy Bawn - or The Castle as it's known locally - when driving into and out of Bellaghy. What a sad state of affairs this historic building has become in the last ten years; a drab, unkempt, moss-covered, quasi-derelict disgrace. The neglect of historic buildings can be disheartening, and it's understandable that the local community may feel disappointed in the apparent lack of attention from those responsible for preserving heritage.
GOOD NEWS AT LAST | PERHAPS?
The announcement of the Irish Government funding for a €4.2million 'writers hub' through the SHARED IRELAND FUND seems like a positive development at first glance. However, there are concerns about the lack of public consultation and the potential disconnect between such projects and the needs of the local community.
Now, it would be remiss of this admin to bemoan the cutting of the ribbon on such a splendid notion but - yes there is a but - what real value will such a facility bring to the local economy and more importantly, how can such a highbrow concept have any real community value?
Ten years ago or more, the then committee of Bellaghy Together were consulted by the then Magherafelt District Council on how to reuse the lands at the old RUC station. Ambitious plans for a multi-purpose community and commercial scheme were almost agreed, but were then discarded to make way for Seamus Heaney HomePlace. No further debate has taken place between the council and the community since then. The Bellaghy Together Committee disbanded in 2014.
CONSULTATION - WHAT CONSULTATION?
Community involvement and engagement are crucial for the success and sustainability of any development project. Without proper consultation, there is a risk that the chosen project may not align with the community's needs or desires. It's important for initiatives like this to consider the social and economic impact on the local area, fostering a sense of community ownership and pride. So what, if any, consultation has taken place and where are the results?
It's also essential to understand the long-term benefits that the 'writers hub' could bring to the local economy and community. If properly executed, such a facility could potentially attract tourism, create job opportunities, and contribute to the cultural and educational enrichment of the area. However, striking a balance between cultural endeavors and practical community needs is crucial.
In summary, while the funding announcement for the writers hub is promising, the lack of prior consultation raises valid concerns. It would be advisable for the community to actively seek more information, engage with relevant stakeholders, and advocate for a development plan that aligns with the broader interests of Bellaghy and its residents.
