Body Count is a powerful new play from internationally recognised, multi-award-winning writer Gary Mitchell, exploring abuse, adolescence, masculinity and the ripples that spread through a family and into the wider community.

Written from a family and societal perspective, this story is about more than one individual or one incident. It asks how abuse affects everyone around it, what we expect of men when they feel powerless, and how families and communities respond when the damage reaches them.

In a world where young people are increasingly exposed to online conversations around masculinity and the manosphere, Body Count opens up an urgent conversation for young people, parents, teachers and anyone trying to understand the pressures shaping adolescence today.

🔦 Threshold Spotlight: Mary Beckett 🔦

Born in Belfast, Mary Beckett began writing in 1949, publishing short stories in The Bell, Irish Writing and Threshold. After a 22-year hiatus, she returned with the short story collection A Belfast Woman (1980) and the novel Give Them Stones (1987).

Beckett’s short story Ruth was selected as the lead piece in the very first issue of Threshold in 1957. At 20, Ruth had run away from home. Born out of wedlock, she lost her mother during childbirth and spent her childhood in an orphanage before being brought back to the McGreevy family farm at the age of 12.

Set against the social conventions of 1950s Northern Ireland, Ruth explores the expectations placed on women, the stigma surrounding illegitimacy, and the complicated relationships between family, love and belonging.

Through Mrs McGreevy, Beckett asks what matters more: social convention or human connection?
