Rain cloud (2025)
oil on recycled coffee bean sackcloth
Vikkie Patterson

Currently showing at the University of Atypical in Belfast, this oil painting forms part of my new set of Hell or high water paintings.

Hell or high water is a series of oil on sackcloth paintings begun in 2019. The paintings reflect on the upheaval caused by the climate crisis as well as depicting coloniality in both Northern Ireland and the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe. As with the previous paintings in this series, the work in this new exhibition Hell or high water III uses recycled coffee bean sacks as an oil paint surface.

The title of the exhibition signifies perseverance and persistence in the face of challenges and the paintings touch on decolonial concerns such as the climate crisis, deforestation, the destruction of biodiversity, the historic displacement of people, and the legacy of racial and sectarian violence. Formal characteristics of the coffee bean sacks, such as the text and the texture, emphasise conceptual links to globalization and colonization, and look at the West through a critical lens, depicting introspective, anthropomorphic land- and streetscapes in portrait format.

The gallery will be open every week from Tuesday - Friday 11-4pm. This solo show exhibition, curated by Zara Lyness, runs until the 21st of February.
