With our Crescendo programme's final showcase event of 2026 coming up, we wanted to share some moments from last year's event in the Ulster Hall. It's always such a delightful opportunity for the participating school children as they get to perform in front of their friends and family, alongside their Ulster Orchestra tutors. Crescendo is a music intervention project in partnership with Queen's University Belfast Innovation Zones, Colin Neighbourhood Partnership and Greater Shankill Children & Young People Zone.

At the end of last month, the fourth year of Ulster Orchestra and EA Music Service’s Endangered Instruments of the Orchestra project culminated in a showcase event where over 80 bassoon and viola players aged 8-18 performed in front of an audience of family and friends. The project aims to develop a new generation of musicians in instruments where numbers have been declining.

The Endangered Instruments of the Orchestra Project is in partnership with EA (Education Authority) Music Service and is supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's Rural Engagement Arts Programme (REAP) and the Miskelly Chorale.

What a way to wave goodbye to our 2025/26 Concert Season on Friday night, with violin soloist Anthony Marwood MBE joining us to give an epic performance of Elgar's Violin Concerto. Our Honorary Principal Guest Conductor Jac van Steen also conducted the Orchestra in performances of Vaughan Williams's playful 'Wasps' Overture and Strauss's grand 'Der Rosenkavalier' Suite. The concert was dedicated to the memory of David Openshaw MBE, Timpanist with the Orchestra from 1972-2012.

As we say goodbye to the season, we also say goodbye to some of our musicians: Second Violin Kevin Harrell, who joined the Orchestra in 1988, and Principal Horn Derek Parkins who has been with the Orchestra since 1982. We wish them both long and happy retirements. We also wish Second Violin Section Leader Gongbo Jiang, Principal Oboe Emily Cockbill, and double bassist Maitiú Gaffney all the very best as they move on to pastures new.

And if you're waiting for news on our 2026/27 Season – marking the Orchestra's 60th anniversary and our first season with our new Chief Conductor Anna Handler Orchestral Conductor – tickets go on sale on 19 June.

Tickets for our Festive Concerts (The Snowman, Messiah, and The Magic of Christmas) and Pops Concerts (Spielberg at 80, Symphonic Smash Hits: 90s Pop, How to Train Your Dragon Live Film Experience and Diamonds are Forever) are already available to book via our website and the Waterfront Hall & Ulster Hall website.
