The Disappearing Wall has disappeared!

Northern Ireland was chosen along with a select group of European countries to host The Disappearing Wall and after a phenomenal couple of weeks it is time to say goodbye to it.
The interactive art installation that stood proudly on the iconic Titanic Slipway celebrated Europe’s diversity of languages and ideas.
Visitors to it took home beautifully inscribed blocks of quotes collected by the Goethe-Institut earlier this year via local contests across Europe. As more and more blocks were removed - 12,000 actually - the Wall disappeared with only the clear Plexiglas grid that held them remaining.

Interest in this unique art installation has been overwhelming and the 12,000 commissioned blocks have now disappeared from the Wall.
Originally advertised to be available until November 11th the Wall will soon be dismantled due to all blocks been lovingly taken home by the people of Belfast and beyond.
Anyone who registered for a block will receive their block in the post over the next two weeks (registration now closed).

Whether it was a quote from Hannah Arendt, a lyric from a Beatles tune, a line from the film Amélie, or a statement by the Hungarian Nobel Prize winner Imre Kertész, in local competitions, the Goethe-Institut asked people in ten European countries for their favourite quote from European high and pop culture.
Since September 2020, these installations were set up in public locations in the participating countries Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Poland, Lithuania, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus. The diverse ideas of Europe are not only visible in this project, but also tangible – and lasting.
