Bank holiday plans - here’s everything you need to know in Bedford Borough.

Whether you’re spending the long weekend with family, catching up with friends, tackling jobs at home or simply enjoying a slower pace, we hope you have a great weekend ahead.

There’s lots happening across the Borough, including the much-loved Duck Race at Bromham Mill on Monday, so keep an eye on local media and community Facebook groups to see what’s happening near you.

Looking for free things to do - there’s plenty for all ages and abilities close to home:

• Enjoy our parks, riverside walks and green spaces
• Visit your local library for activities, books and family fun
• Explore The Higgins Bedford
• Check Bedford Borough Family Hubs and their What’s On calendar for family activities and support

Sometimes the best bank holiday memories are the simple ones - a walk, a picnic, or discovering somewhere new nearby.

Bin collections
Collections are running as normal. You can check your collection day online anytime.

Household Waste & Recycling Centre (‘the tip’)
Open as usual. Bank holidays are often busy, so if you can, visit earlier or later in the day when it’s a little quieter.

Top tip: sorting waste by material before you arrive can help make visits quicker and easier for everyone. Please keep children and pets in vehicles while on site.

Customer Services / Bedford Borough Hub
The team will reopen on Tuesday morning, but many services remain available online, including reporting fly-tipping or potholes, paying for services and requesting permits.

Visitor Information Centre, Silver Street
Open Wednesday–Saturday, 10am–4pm.

Libraries
Saturday: open as usual with activities and children’s clubs.
Sunday: Bedford Central Library open as usual, including Sunday Funday for younger children.
Monday: Kempston and Putnoe libraries open for LibraryPlus members (10am–4pm). Bedford Central, Bromham and Wootton libraries closed.

The Higgins Bedford
Open Saturday 11am–5pm, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday 2pm–5pm.

Maybe we’re mad? Or is this what the people want?
Summer holidays have landed and we’re staying open until 8pm at the Kiosk EVERYDAY where possible. Last golf 7:30pm. Now open 9am - 8pm daily until late August 2026. Evening park walks just got better, enjoy a sweet bite with us, later coffee pick me up or a round of family / friends golf after dinner.

What an incredible Bedford River Festival weekend! 🎉

As another fantastic festival comes to a close, we just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who made it so special.

To everyone who came to visit us over the weekend, thank you for choosing to spend part of your festival with us. Whether you stopped by for a coffee, some food, a boat hire or simply to enjoy the atmosphere, your support means the world to us.

This year’s festival gave us another reason to celebrate. After weeks of planning, building and plenty of late nights, we were absolutely thrilled to be awarded Best Overall Raft in the Bedford River Festival Raft Race! 🏆 It was a real team effort, and we’re incredibly proud of everyone who gave up their time, ideas and energy to make it happen.

A huge thank you also goes to our amazing staff, who worked tirelessly throughout one of the busiest weekends of the year, always with a smile and a commitment to giving everyone a great experience.

We’re equally grateful to our suppliers and contractors, whose support behind the scenes helped keep everything running smoothly from start to finish.

Finally, thank you to everyone who supports us throughout the season. Events like the Bedford River Festival are the highlight of the summer, but it’s your continued support throughout the year that allows us to do what we love.

We’re proud to be part of the Bedford community and honoured to play a small part in one of the town’s biggest celebrations.

Join us for the Christmas Eve ‘Jingle Jam’ on December 24, 2025, at The Kiosk in Russell Park from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM. This free, festive community event is the perfect way to celebrate the season. Embrace the holiday spirit with hot mulled wine and Baileys hot chocolate available for purchase. Enjoy live music and sing along with Matt Roberts & Company from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM as they perform the “12 Songs of Christmas.” Song sheets will be provided to help you join in the fun! Before that, from 3:40 PM to 4:00 PM, delight in a performance by the Song Squad, featuring a children’s choir and performing arts group. Their mission is to “uplift our community through the power of singing.” Come and share in the joy and camaraderie of the season! Just come by on the day and join in!
