Online Spring Term Week 4 - Metalic Watercolour Beetles!
This week we explored the world of beetles through the lens of scientific illustration, learning how accuracy and creativity work hand in hand. Students practiced mark‑making techniques such as hatching, stippling, and contour lines to capture texture and form. We then created detailed beetle drawings, beginning with a light pencil sketch before inking, adding layered watercolour washes, and finishing with metallic paints to highlight the natural iridescence found in many species. It was a vibrant session that blended science, observation, and shimmering creativity.

F2F Winter Term Week 11 - Ink & Sanguine London Perspective
For our final week this term, we created atmospheric perspective landscapes in black and sepia ink, using Gabriel Loppé’s foggy Thames photograph as inspiration. We built up the misty London scene with diluted sepia and black ink washes, gradually strengthening tones for the nearer trees and streetlights, and adding subtle charcoal to the distant Houses of Parliament. Texture was developed along the riverbank with dry‑brush ink and loose charcoal marks, and the water was layered with diluted washes to create ripples and movement. We finished by refining architectural details, deepening the streetlights, and enhancing the fog and vignette for a dramatic final effect.

Online Spring Term Week 3 - Ink Samurai
Last week’s ColourWheel session immersed us in the expressive world of ink as we explored samurai figures in motion, learning how to use bold contrasts, flowing brushwork, and dynamic gesture drawing to capture strength, honour, and movement. We experimented with ink washes and fine liners, practised centre, side, and grass strokes, and studied lines of action, tilts, and twists to bring energy into our poses. Building up our samurai artwork step by step, we layered darks, lights, mid‑tones, and finally added the striking red sun, working confidently with ink’s fast‑drying nature. It was a powerful, poetic session that encouraged everyone to blend precision with expressive freedom.
P.S. Spot the ink spill in the last pic!

F2F Winter Term Week 10 - Acrylic Aurora Borealis
In this week’s class, we painted the magical Northern Lights, exploring how to capture their flowing movement through blending, glazing, and layered acrylic techniques. Students began by practising directional strokes and mixing luminous greens before building a full night‑sky scene with a glowing horizon, starry sky, and soft white aurora streaks. Once dry, we added colourful glazes to create depth and vibrancy, then painted the dark silhouettes of trees, mountains, and snowy ground. By the end, everyone had created an expressive winter landscape filled with dramatic colour, contrast, and the shimmering glow of the aurora.

Online Spring Term Week 2 - Sanguine Rust
We explored the beauty of aged, corroded metal by drawing rusty keys using sanguine, black charcoal, and white charcoal, starting with simple pencil shapes before refining proportions and adding warm mid‑tones with sanguine. We built depth by layering dark charcoal into the deepest shadows, then lifted the drawing with crisp white highlights along worn edges and reflective metal surfaces. Students experimented with mark‑making, blending, and tonal layering to capture texture and contrast, and by the end of the session everyone had created a richly atmospheric study that really celebrated the character of old, weathered objects.

F2F Winter Term Week 9 - Acrylic Winter Trees
We spent this week creating peaceful winter landscapes, exploring how low winter sunlight stretches cool blue shadows across snow as we layered acrylics to build depth, colour and texture. Students blended a soft sky and snowy base, added a subtle horizon, enriched the sunset tones, and sketched in tree and shadow shapes before painting birch trunks, evergreen branches, and delicate bark details. Using techniques like flat washes, dry brushing, scumbling and blending, everyone built up vibrant snow textures and long, dramatic shadows, finishing with a colourful, atmospheric scene that captured the quiet beauty of a winter’s day.

Online Spring Term Week 1 - Graphite Piggys!
Back with another term, we spent the session bringing a pair of charming little piglets to life in graphite, starting with loose warm‑ups to explore marks, textures, and shading, then moving into quick, expressive pig sketches before building a full drawing step by step—from light construction lines to refined outlines, smooth blended tones, and layered highlights and shadows that gave each piglet its soft, rounded character.

F2F Winter Term Week 8 - Gouache Art Deco Vogue
We explored the elegant world of 1930s Vogue posters, looking at their Art Deco shapes, glamorous styling, and sophisticated colour palettes, and then used those influences to guide a gouache portrait illustration. Students sketched their compositions with light guidelines, mixed rich reds and soft skin tones, and built up smooth, opaque layers with careful brushwork to achieve crisp edges and a vintage editorial feel. They refined shadows, highlights, and details on the face and hand, added clean blocks of colour to hats and clothing, and some chose complementary backgrounds to complete their modern‑retro Vogue‑inspired portraits.
