Our term opener was a brilliant success as students brought dramatic steam locomotives to life in charcoal! After warming up with a simple sketch to explore the shapes and structure of a train, everyone moved on to their main artwork, choosing a striking reference photo and building up rich darks, glowing highlights and swirling steam on mid‑tone paper. The finished pieces looked atmospheric, bold and full of energy — such an impressive start to the term and a fantastic achievement from every artist.

F2F Week 9 - Watercolour Line & Wash Lisbon Trams
This week, we captured the charm and movement of Lisbon’s iconic tram using loose ink lines and transparent watercolour washes. We warmed up with perspective practice and continuous‑line tram sketches before building our main urban scene, placing the tram off‑centre and using expressive ink to define buildings, cables, and street rhythm. Students then added soft washes of warm yellows, pale blues, and muted greens, deepening shadows and strengthening contrasts to create depth and atmosphere. By the end, everyone produced lively, characterful sketches that balanced confident line work with fresh, flowing colour—full of Lisbon’s light and energy.

F2F Week 8 - Gouache David Hockney Inspired!
Honouring the late great David Hockney this week. We took inspiration from David Hockney’s iconic swimming‑pool paintings, and everyone explored how colour, pattern, and movement can describe water without relying on realism. We began by practising different water textures, then built bright gouache studies using flat turquoise bases, flowing white reflections, and layered blues to create depth. Students painted cropped inflatable rings with bold, opaque colour, added highlights and shadows for volume, and finished with playful pattern details and sparkling touches. By the end, the group produced fresh, joyful pool scenes full of rhythm, heat, and that unmistakable Hockney sense of summer.

F2F Week 7 - Bleach & Ink!
Wow. This week took a dramatic turn into the world of night predators as we experimented with bleach as a painting medium, creating light by removing colour rather than adding it. Students began by testing different bleach strengths and tools, then built atmospheric studies on black‑inked paper, sketching wolves and big cats before gradually lifting out moonlit highlights. Through layered bleach, careful timing, and bold mark‑making, everyone explored contrast, movement, and mystery, producing striking nocturnal creatures that emerged from the darkness with glowing eyes, textured fur, and a powerful sense of presence.

Class explored the theme of Jazz Music through lively composition, colour theory, and expressive mark‑making, and students produced energetic studies using blind contour drawing, oil pastel, and acrylic. We began by creating movement‑based sketches of jazz instruments, building continuous‑line drawings and developing them with cool and warm complementary colours. As the session progressed, everyone layered oil pastel with acrylic to add contrast, texture, and rhythm, experimenting with sgraffito, overlapping shapes, and bold brush‑marks to capture the feel of music in motion. By the end, the group created vibrant, dynamic pieces full of colour, gesture, and personality.

This class focused on the vibrant beauty of nasturtiums, and everyone explored their bold shapes, flowing stems, and rich colour contrasts using soft pastels. We began with pastel‑handling practice, experimenting with application, blending, and layering, before sketching simple circles, ovals, and guiding lines to build lively flower and leaf forms. As the session progressed, students layered warm oranges and reds against cool greens to create depth, luminosity, and movement, resulting in expressive botanical studies full of energy and painterly texture.
