Hand coiled and smokefired ceramic forms

‘Standing Stones’ is a group of five tall handcoiled pieces beautifully displayed in the mighty Kings Room The Salisbury Museum. The series was installed Wells Cathedral in last year’s Wells Art Contemporary where it won the Jane Bowe Memorial Prize. It’s a reflection on the anthropomorphic nature of some standing stones.

The room itself is a historic delight and holds a brilliant display of the museum’s ceramics collection from prehistory to contemporary. I’m absolutely thrilled to show my pieces here. It’s really moving to see my work against the ancient majestic pieces that first influenced me and remain a propelling source.
If you’re visiting, my work is across two upstairs rooms. Don’t miss their outstanding pots in the Wessex room that were unearthed from the Stonehenge region. They’re showstoppers.

This big beauty is part of a collection within my exhibition The Salisbury Museum dedicated to grave goods.

I’ve always been touched by unearthed graves and what their contents reveal - not just about the person themselves, but how they were held in their communities. The longevity some of us prize now is an anomaly to humanity. It’s easy to assume that where lives are tenuous and mortality high, relationships are held in check for sanity. Grave goods say differently. They remind us how humans value humans. It’s a good reminder as we move forward.

The exhibition ends on 20th September, open daily.

Well done for steering me so ably in front of a camera lens!

One of five ‘Standing Stones’ currently residing in the magnificent Kings Room in my exhibition ‘Ancestors’ The Salisbury Museum. The exhibition ends on 20th September and is in two of the upstairs rooms. Open daily. Hope you can make it - it’s a wonderful museum just opposite the cathedral.

One of these pots from a couple of years back is still in my collection and was part of ‘Cosmos’ RWA earlier this year. I’m delighted the exhibition is touring to Aberdeen soon.
It was on my mind last night whilst I sat in my little garden watching the shooting stars.
Frome’s on the edge of Cranborne Chase dark sky reserve, so despite being in town my view of the night sky was wonderful.

I watch the sky every year at this time, but I’ve never seen so many satellites constantly in vision. Four or five at any given moment.i can remember the first I ever saw, in Namibia in 1999. Now there are about 18,000 active satellites in low orbit.
The Spacex programme has permission for 42,000.

When it was announced, back in Covid times, I made these smokefired pieces. Quiet protests. My favourite had a title that held my fury. I later renamed it ‘No Thank You’. It was a very pretty vessel for the intensity of my thoughts. Each dot was applied by hand. A meditation.

When I watched last night it was hard to focus. The satellite paths were distracting. Even the sky - that’s held our quiet, sacred attention throughout humanity - has become a disquieting place of constant movement.

I’m glad I’m old enough to remember.

Five of these large ‘Standing Stones’ are standing proud upstairs The Salisbury Museum. They’re part of the exhibition ‘Ancestors’ which draws on artefacts from Salisbury, Devizes and Orkney Museums.

All the large sculptures on display are ceramic, formed using the ancient and laborious technique of coiling by hand. The exhibition is open daily until 20th September.

Currently for sale in my exhibition ‘Ancestors’ The Salisbury Museum .

These pinch-formed balls are a playful response to the many beautifully carved balls unearthed in Scotland. They date from the Neolithic and are a total joy. Elaborate, strong, intelligent pieces celebrating the round.

The blue punches through in the way that it does. The prized wonder of lapis, cobalt and turquoise spreading the globe. Back then we celebrated and valued the treasures and magic of the earth.

Little fragile balls holding delight, wonder and deep-boned memory.

I’m hugely grateful to for all his work on a BAKING hot day to capture this image of part of my exhibition ‘Ancestors’ The Salisbury Museum.

Thank you to everyone at the museum and those of you who’ve already been and shared your welcome feedback. The exhibition is open every day until September 20th.

I’m delighted that this handcoiled and smokefired piece has been selected for Black Swan Arts Open 26.

Black Swan Arts is a place close to my heart so I’m thrilled to have a piece accepted. There’s a great team of selectors and judges this year so I’m looking forward to seeing an excellent selection of vibrant work. The exhibition runs from 8th August to 27th September upstairs in the Long Gallery.

If you’re visiting Frome for the exhibition do shout if you’d like a visit to my studio and I’ll see what can be done.

You may have noticed I struggle to do small.

Whilst my body enables it, I’ll enjoy it and push it. Life is short.

This piece is in my current exhibition ‘Ancestors’ The Salisbury Museum until 20th September. You can find it upstairs next to the Kings Room. I like its uncompromising strength. Like all my work it references different human pasts, different beliefs that are unknown but familiar. A reminder of our long and complex past.

This might look like a totem pole or some other object of ritual or collective meaning. It might suggest many things. It might bring uncomfortable feelings about cultural appropriation and respect.
An object can bring different things in different contexts.

I made it with my bare hands and rolled squidges of clay, slowly and instinctively, in the ancient way. I made it because I wanted to, and because I can, and because that’s what people have always done. We make, we sort, we stack. We create.
