ELLIE JENKINS is a Bristolian poet who graduated from studying Creative Writing at Bath Spa University. Whether it’s a discussion on classism, sexuality, or the beauty of a ripe red pepper, it is likely that Ellie Jenkins has a poem for it. She hopes you will join her writing journey - though no promises that it will be a sane one! CAL WENSLEY writes on the death of their father with all of the intensity of someone who doesn’t want to admit that their father is dead. To some it might sound like they treat death as a joke and the’re right. Cal tackles sensitive issues with a lack of sensitivity and a whole lot of humanity. Cal’s poetry might make you cry but just remember that it’s their dad that’s dead so try not to be more upset than them.

EMMA TAYLOR is a multi-slam-winning spoken word artist, event organiser, and performer based in Bath. She is a Bristol Slam Champion, Uni Slam CoachesSLAM 2024 winner, and placed 2nd in the Farrago UK Slam Championship 2023.

✨Emma Taylor Profile (by Kate & Ellie) ✨

Name: Emma / Gf / Nomatha
Go-to breakfast: their debut collection “Bed &”
Poetry skills: absolutely flaying you alive but you feel warm inside about it and you think you might be in love??
Talent: avant garde driving techniques. Bougie bread knowledge. Could out run anything but her own fatigue. Making people feel loved and wanted in this world.
First impression: someone too cool to be my friend by long way.
Most recent impression: someone too cool (and kind, and sweet, and brave, and funny) to be my friend by a longer way.
Emma’s biggest fear: leaving Norni (the hamster teddy) in a hotel while on a work trip and having to spend £35 to get DPD to deliver him home but the hotel keep saying to the delivery driver that they don’t have him so it takes three pick up attempts
A recent message she sent me: That was honestly one of the best 15 minutes of my life.
If Emma could bring three things to a desert island with them, they would bring: 1. Her Amazing debut pamphlet Bed & Breakfast which is launching AT Hear My Voice on April 25th, a sugar free red bull and Taylor Swift.
Status: means the whole world to everyone who has ever met her

She was longlisted for the Outspoken Prize for Performance Poetry, and the Saboteur Award for Best Spoken Word Artist in 2022. Her debut collection ‘Cliff Notes’ was released by Verve Poetry Press in 2022.

✨ Kathryn O’Driscoll Profile (by Emma) ✨

Name: Kate
Go-to breakfast: the enemies for her friends and family.
Poetry skills: Before we met I made a YouTube playlist of all of Kate’s poems and listened to them all in one sitting and it was everything.
Talent: literally everything. She writes. She paints. She draws. She edits. She DRIVES. All the slays.
First impression: super cool and so talented and wonderful and kind and happy.
Most recent impression: super cool and so talented and wonderful and kind and clinically depressed.
Kate’s biggest fear: a poem that rhymes but the rhyming takes away from the ✨poem✨.
The last message they sent me: ‘🍟’
If Kate could bring three things to a desert island with her, she would bring: 1. UniSlam 2. The heckling challenge. 3. cheering loudly.
Status: means the whole world to me

🎤✨ Unbelievably grateful and hugely thrilled to announce that in a Hear My Voice *special*, ‘Bed and Breakfast’, my debut poetry pamphlet, which is all about -ing with chronic illness, will be launched in-person on the 25th of April at 7pm!

Join us for an unforgettable night of stupidly good poetry performances from my closest poetry geniuses, my guiding lights, and best friends. Open mic slots await you at the door! I’ll be performing poems from the book and talking about all things Bed and Breakfast🥄 Hope to see you there 🥹

Cal Wensley is a powerhouse of spoken word in the South West. Involved in Bristol spoken word events organising for ‘Satellite of Love’ and ‘Tonic’, they also have generously given their time for the past three years to co-coach the Bath Spa Uni Slam team alongside Kathryn O’Driscoll. So its only fitting that we share their incredible talent with you on the eve of a new team being formed!

BIO: Cal Wensley writes on the death of their father with all of the intensity of someone who doesn’t want to admit that their father is dead.

To some it might sound like they treat death as a joke and they’re right.

Cal tackles sensitive issues with a lack of sensitivity and a whole lot of humanity.

Cal’s poetry might make you cry but just remember that it’s their dad that’s dead so try not to be more upset than them.

✨Cal Wensley Profile (by Emma) ✨

Name: Cal
Go-to breakfast: the tears spilled from friends who listen to their poems and continue to cry even after hearing them many times.
Poetry skills: As soon as Cal enters a room you know you’re going to have a good time (and you might cry)
Talent: loving their friends so much ‘it feels like trapped wind’
First impression: sweetest human who said nice things about the horrific teen-angst poetry I used to write.
Most recent impression: A truly gorgeous presence in my life, with a special place in my heart.
Cal’s biggest fear: a boring jumper.
The last message they sent me: ‘i will wag my fist at your from afar’
If Cal could bring three things to a desert island with them, they would bring: 1. Their family (including the doggo, obviously) 2. Their friends. 3. A floor to lie down on when they hear especially good poems.
Status: means the whole world to me

first impression: too cool to be my friend
Most recent impression: feral (and one of my best friends)
Biggest fear: a man with no shoes on
A message she’s sent me in the past 24 hours: ‘best idea: funeral as an open mic’
