This lovely portrait of a lady is attributed to 18th century artist Adriana Verelst. Many of her portraits have been misattributed to other male artists who dominated the market of the period such as Godfrey Kneller and Charles Jervas but more of her work is now coming to light as subtle differences in her style of painting are being recognised and appreciated.

Verelst’s hand is particularly evident in the treatment of the sitter’s gown with its luminous, bright highlights, a technique influenced by her uncle, the celebrated flower painter Simon Verelst.

This painting of a handsome Collie by English artist John Emms exudes a sense of calm through his steady watchful gaze across the landscape.

It comes from the collection of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts who collected dog paintings, in particular those of Collie dogs which he and his wife Shirley loved and owned.

✨A striking family likeness ✨

Whilst researching our recently acquired portrait of Theodosia Barnwell attributed to Scottish born Court painter Allan Ramsay (1734-1786) , we came across a portrait of her brother, Charles also attributed to Ramsay (previously with Darnley Fine Art) who bears a remarkable resemblance to his younger sibling. Both are elegantly dressed in the fashion of the day and gaze outwardly at the viewer with an air of confidence and poise - ready to embark on the next stage of their lives and make their mark as young adults in 18th century England.

Wouldn’t it be lovely if they could be re-united as a pair one day?

Meet the enigmatic Mr Charles Dartiquenave (1664-1737), painted by Michael Dahl, circa 1700.

Widely rumoured to be the ‘natural son’ of Charles II, Charles was a celebrated bon-vivant and a central member of the famous Kit-Kat Club, a position that placed him at the epicenter of Whig power and literary genius. Alexander Pope immortalised him in his Satires, specifically noting his legendary refined tastes. Jonathan Swift in his personal journals frequently mentions “Darty,” documenting their interactions within the inner sanctum of London’s intellectual elite.

Beyond his popularity in social circles, Dartiqunave held the prestigious office of Paymaster of the Royal Works. This placed him in direct control of the King’s architectural legacy and building projects, further verifying his proximity to the sovereign and his status and privilege within the workings of the Royal Court.

We are delighted to present this early 18th century portrait of a lady, attributed to Adriana Verelst (c.1683-1769), a member of the distinguished Verelst family of Dutch artists.

For centuries, much of her oeuvre was misattributed, often to male family members or a mysterious “Maria.” Recent research has finally restored many works to their true author, revealing Adriana Verelst to be a polymath, a linguist, and a formidable professional artist who successfully navigated the gender-restricted art world of the early Georgian era.

✨New discovery✨
We are delighted to present this exquisite portrait of Theodosia Barnwell, attributed to the celebrated Scottish portrait artist Allan Ramsay who became Principal Painter to King George III. It is likely to have been painted as a pendant to a portrait of her brother Charles, painted by Ramsay in 1756, which closely aligns with this work (see the website for further details).
Ramsay was renowned for his delicate and sensitive portrayals of his subjects, evident in this work’s luminous quality and natural sensitivity.
The painting is currently undergoing light restoration and will be available for sale shortly Isherwood Fine Art.

The face of the son of a King?
Slowly being revealed from under centuries of yellowed varnish is this fine portrait of Charles Darqneuve by Michael Dahl, circa 1700.
Widely rumoured to be the ‘natural son’ of Charles II, Charles was a celebrated bon-vivant and a central member of the famous Kit-Kat Club, a position that placed him at the epicenter of Whig power and literary genius. His presence in the era’s definitive texts serves as a primary source for his influence. Alexander Pope immortalised him in his Satires, specifically noting his legendary refined tastes. Jonathan Swift in his personal journals frequently mentions “Darty,” documenting their interactions within the inner sanctum of London’s intellectual elite.

Beyond his social standing, Darqneuve held the prestigious office of Paymaster of the Royal Works. This placed him in direct control of the King’s architectural legacy and building projects, further verifying his proximity to the sovereign and his status within the Court’s machinery.

A face from 18th century Bath, fresh from the restorers and looking resplendent in her 18th century frame.
Painted in Bath in 1783, Thomas Beach masterfully balances the era’s taste for theatricality with a sense of quiet dignity. Beach was celebrated for his “strong likenesses and you can feel it here - there is a poise and intelligence in her expression that feels remarkably modern. Contemporaries often remarked that his portraits were so honest and life-like that they “always explain themselves.”

While this lady’s identity remains a mystery, she was perhaps in the circle of the famous 18th century actress Mrs Siddons, who lived in Bath and was a close friend and muse of Beach.

A beautiful dining room featured in this month’s House and Garden magazine featuring our portrait of a lady and her daughter with an exotic bird by Swedish born artist Michael Dahl (1659-1743).
We love how the portrait sings out from the panoramic wallpaper reflecting accents of green and red seen throughout the room.

Whilst researching this portrait by Dorset born artist Thomas Beach, I came across a Christie’s auction catalogue entry from 1989 which confirmed my suspicion that the hair ringlet falling down onto her chest was a later embellishment. Why this was done, I have no idea!
The portrait is currently being restored and the later overpainting will be gently removed to reveal the subject as the artist originally intended.

It was painted at the height of Beach’s success as the preeminent artist in Bath, the Georgian era’s social and intellectual heart outside London for the fashionable elite.
