Overton is hosting a weekend of FREE Jane Austen events over the weekend of 12th and 13th September as part of the Heritage Open Days scheme 😍

SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 10AM: (pre-booking required)
Guided 9 mile walk from Overton to Jane Austen's birthplace and home for 25 years at Steventon where she wrote early versions of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey.

SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 11AM: (pre-booking required)
Guided 2.5 mile walk exploring Overton in Jane Austen's Time.

Less than 3 miles from the Austen's home in Steventon, Overton was the home of Jane Austen's brother, James, who was curate at Overton from 1790 and with its many traders including the local post office it was the nearest place to the Austen family for all the necessities of life.

SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 3.30PM - Overton Community Centre:
'Jane Austen's early Hampshire Life; exploring a community that shaped her' - a talk by members of the Overton Jane Austen Trails Group.

SUNDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 12NOON - Overton Community Centre
Overton In Jane Austen's Time part 1 - What was Overton like when Jane Austen knew it? Exploring Overton's population, homes, business and literacy in Jane Austen's time.

SUNDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 12NOON - Overton Community Centre
Overton in Jane Austen's Time part 2 - What was Overton like when Jane Austen knew it? The church, travel, poverty, illness, crime and punishment, military service.

Overton Community Centre will be open throughout the weekend with displays of the history of Overton Community Centre and Jane Austen's early life in Steventon. Children's playground games and classroom activities.

On Saturday and Sunday at 2pm there will be a talk on the history of the Community Centre building (the site of the New Inn in Jane Austen's time).

Many thanks to all those who came to our AGM last night and got involved in the conversation – it is very much appreciated.

We thank John Troman for his tremendous help during his time as a trustee and wish him well, now he has hung up his boots.

Our Annual General Meeting is on July 7th at 7:30pm and everyone is invited! (You can find the Agenda in the comments on this post).

You may not know that the Community Centre is run by a charity (Overton Community Association) and we would love to have more of the community involved. Joining as a member for just £12 for the year would make a big difference. Come to the AGM to find out more.

CANCELLED!

You may have read in the July issue of Overton News & Views that we were planning to hold a community metal clear-out day. Unfortunately this idea has now been shelved – at least in the short-term.

In the meantime, we are pleased to share that we have sorted our waste from Overton Music Festival, so that the least amount possible goes to landfill.

We thank everyone who used our can recycling bins, and hope to bring them out for future events.

There are so many thank-yous to give to all those who supported Overton Music Festival this weekend. Thanks to all our awesome volunteers and to everyone who came along or took part.

UPDATE: The raffle was drawn on Sunday and all three winners have been contacted. Thank you so much for taking part.

🎶 It’s the final day of Overton Music Festival with some more great acts! And it’s your Last chance to turn £1 in to £100 by joining in our raffle. Any profit made from the festival goes towards maintaining this beautiful, charity run, Grade II listed building. Best of luck!
