Northern Heartlands

Northern Heartlands Northern Heartlands CIO uses the transforming power of creativity in all we do, but our method is grounded in the nitty-gritty of the real world.

Northern Heartlands believes in strong, connected and healthy local communities where people are actively involved in shaping their lives and their environment. We understand that communities need to be listened to first, that every place has its own unique circumstances, that problems and issues are always complex and multisided

We listen and build trust. We have trained community facilitators,

a network of skilled practitioners, and the experience to match the right person and approach with communities and projects. We use creative methods developed by artists to provide spaces in which people can pause, speak their own words, think differently, find new ways of doing things and form better versions of themselves, their community, their landscape or organisation. We facilitate the practical changes that communities identify and want to achieve. We learn from everything we do and share that learning widely, both at events and through our digital platform.

It's Loneliness Awareness Week.

Through our work, we see every day how creativity can help deepen connections, strengthen emotional and social wellbeing, and foster a sense of belonging.
Loneliness affects people of all ages. In County Durham alone, around 22,000 adults aged 18–64 are socially isolated, while a further 19,000 people aged 65+ experience loneliness.

This year's theme, Giving Loneliness a Voice, feels particularly important. At Northern Heartlands, creating opportunities for people to share their experiences, connect with others and feel heard is woven throughout our work. We help to create welcoming spaces where people can build relationships, grow in confidence and feel part of something bigger than themselves. It all contributes to our vision of strong, connected and healthy communities where people are actively involved in shaping their own lives and the places around them.

This week, we're joining Marmalade Trust in encouraging conversations about loneliness and connection. Sometimes a simple conversation, shared experience or warm welcome can make all the difference. πŸ’œ

This thoughtful piece from the Rural Durham Community Research Network explores how creative approaches can help make space for stories that might otherwise go unheard.

In many rural communities, people can feel overlooked in conversations about policy, services and place. Distance, transport challenges and digital exclusion can all make it harder for people to share their experiences. Yet these communities hold a wealth of knowledge, stories and insight that deserve to be listened to.

At Northern Heartlands, we see time and again how creativity can open up conversations, build trust and create opportunities for people to tell their own stories in their own way. Through making, drawing, photography, storytelling and other creative approaches, people can share experiences that traditional research methods don't always capture.

It's well worth a read πŸ‘‡

Last week, the artist in residence for PLACE Lab Shildon, Victoria Melody spent time with young people from Shildon facilitating workshops at King James I Academy and at Shildon Methodist Hall as part of a new PLACE Lab Shildon project. ✨

Through games, creative activities and conversation, young people shared their thoughts on creativity, Shildon and the future. Afterwards, they spoke about the importance of pushing themselves outside their comfort zones, expanding their imagination and seeing things from other people's perspectives.

A brilliant start to a project that will continue to be shaped by young people's ideas and experiences. If you know a young person from Shildon who would like to be involved please email [email protected] πŸ’›

PLACE Lab Shildon is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to explore and celebrate the heritage and lived experiences of Shildon through creative storytelling and community collaboration.
We would like to thank our funders – The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England – for their generous support and belief in the power of culture and heritage to create lasting change.

This week is Great Big Green Week, a national celebration of communities coming together to care for nature, tackle climate change and make a positive difference where they live. πŸ’š

We're thinking about the role artists can play in helping us understand and connect with the places around us.

Across Northern Heartlands projects, artists have worked alongside communities, farmers, land managers, scientists and local residents to explore our landscapes through creativity. They help us notice, question, listen and imagine; creating opportunities for people to share stories, build relationships and see familiar places in new ways.

Whether through walking, making, listening, storytelling or creating together, artists can help bring people into conversations about the future of our environment.
