Unfortunately, due to the wild weather expected over the weekend, the decision has been made to cancel the Sat, Oct 24th 2pm closing event and performance of "Health of the Sublime" by Carrie Fertig.

The exhibition will still be open from 12-4pm on Saturday, should you be able to safely visit.

Makers highlight – Kelda Young

Rooted in a strong connection to materials and the physical act of making, Kelda works with abstracted forms drawn from the Scottish landscape, photographs, and small, fleeting moments, translating these into considered compositions. Over time, their work has become more simplified and abstract, allowing them to focus on balance, proportion, and the relationship between form and surface within each piece.

Kelda says “I make jewellery because there's nothing more rewarding than creating pieces that hold deep personal meaning. I value the individuality of hand fabrication, where subtle variations ensure that no two works are ever the same. This sense of uniqueness is central to my approach and one of the aspects of making I find most rewarding.”

Next week at the Barn | Concerned Others

Friday 30 October @ 7.30pm

A intimate tabletop performance, from award-winning theatre company Tortoise in a Nutshell, Concerned Others presents the stories of critically underheard voices, accounts that paint us as a nation struggling to recognise a deadly culture of shame, ignorance and misunderstanding surrounding substance dependence and drug-related death.

Intricate miniature worlds unfold in front of the audience’s eyes, creating detailed, confronting microcosms of contemporary Scotland, placed halfway between dream and cold reality.

Coming soon to the Barn | Concerned Others

Scotland has the highest rate of drug related death in Europe - one of the highest known rates in the world. In this intimate tabletop performance, Concerned Others tells the unheard stories of families and friends supporting those with substance dependancy, using carefully assembled audio collage of real testimonies from people with first-hand knowledge. This experimental and original show uses puppetry, animation and mini installations to inspire compassion for not just one protagonist struggling with substance misuse, but our whole nation.

Fancy a Dance? 🕺

Led by local dancer Laura Booth, Fancy a Dance is a creative movement session for people with low vision & partial sight, coming very soon to the Barn. The sessions promise to be absorbing, fun, set to beautiful music and filled with possibilities of creating new connections to people in your community.

Sessions will take place
Wednesdays 4, 11, 18 & 25 November
Wednesdays 2, 9, 16 December
10:15am - 11:15am, with tea and coffee afterwards.

Next week at the Barn | Wicked Quines

Wednesday 28 October @ 7.30pm

Discover the story behind Wicked Quines, a new play inspired by the Scottish witch panic of 1596-97. Beginning with an introduction to the history that inspired the play, this interactive session invites participants to explore extracts from the script through optional readings and discussion.

As well as exploring the play itself, we'll share our approach to making theatre inspired by the North East of Scotland and invite participants to join a conversation about the stories that shape our communities. What histories, people and places do you think deserve to be seen on stage?

New to flock this year – Meet Highland Sea Ceramics

Manon’s inner turmoil and struggle for survival lie at the devastating heart of Kenneth MacMillan’s 1974 adaptation of Abbé Prévost’s novel. In this signature work of The Royal Ballet, MacMillan’s nuanced understanding of human psychology makes for an unflinching look into the moral degradation of Manon’s Paris, while all its decadence and decay are brought to life through Jules Massenet’s score and Nicholas Georgiadis’s designs.

Next week at the Barn | Film - The Bushman Winter Has Come plus Q&A

Sunday 25 October @ 7.30pm

Drawing back on his time spent living with the Kalahari Bushmen, paul john myburgh invites us to a conversation on the early beginnings of humanity, our physical and spiritual evolution and what it means to be human in the world today. An immersive journey towards a place where we may, once again, know who we are in the context of our life on this earth.

The audience can expect a ten-minute introduction, followed by a one-hour screening of the original film ‘Sand Face’, and then a Q&A session. The evening closes with a signing of the companion book ‘The Bushman Winter Has Come’.
