We’re delighted to welcome Liverpool-born violinist Charlie Roberts to the Calder Consort! Charlie is currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music with Cath Yates and Cecily Ward, working towards her postgraduate degree after completing her undergraduate studies at RNCM in 2026.

Alongside her performance career, Charlie is passionate about music education and community engagement. She has been a tutor with Early Music as Education since 2022, having originally joined the organisation as a student, and has worked extensively in music and healthcare settings, including as a Young Creator with Songbirds Music UK at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. She was also part of the Benedetti Foundation’s 2025/26 Ambassador cohort.

As a performer, Charlie has appeared with ensembles including Azure Quartet, Liverpool Concert Orchestra and Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, as well as performing with RNCM Symphony Orchestra at venues including the Bridgewater Hall and Mayfield Depot. A recent highlight was performing in a side-by-side concert with the BBC Philharmonic.

We’re particularly excited to have Charlie bringing her energy, versatility and enthusiasm for historical performance to Calder Consort, as we continue exploring the vibrant world of Baroque chamber music.

We’re delighted to introduce one of the new violinists joining Calder Consort, Andrew Taheny!

Andrew is a baroque violinist who performs regularly across the UK with leading ensembles including the Hallé, Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and Scottish Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Irish Baroque Orchestra, Manchester Baroque, Instruments of Time & Truth, Hanover Band and Collegium Musicum 90.

A passionate chamber musician, Andrew also performs with the Millbank Quartet, Musica Antica Rotherhithe and Les Acolytes.

Andrew studied at the University of Edinburgh with Ruth Crouch before continuing his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music with Julia Hanson and Pauline Nobes. He was a 2023/24 Southbank Sinfonia Violin Fellow and took part in the 2024/25 Hallé/RNCM Advanced Orchestral String Programme.

For Calder Consort, Andrew brings both his modern and historical performance experience, playing a Dearlove violin from 1832 and a J.C. Kloz baroque violin from 1756, with bows by Eitan Hoffer.

We’re delighted to share more rehearsal footage from our recording project, celebrating the beauty and depth of Italian chamber music while bringing greater attention to the often-overlooked works of Italian women composers, including Isabella Leonarda and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani.

Recorded in April 2026, this video features movements from Isabella Leonarda’s Sonata III, performed by new Calder Consort members Andrew Taheny and Charlie Roberts (violins), alongside long-standing members Matthew Phillips (cello) and Dylan McCaig (director and continuo).

We are deeply grateful to Liverpool Cathedral for generously welcoming us and allowing us to film in the stunning surroundings of the Lady Chapel.

Happy Bank Holiday Monday Everyone! We’re excited to share more rehearsal footage from our recording project, highlighting the richness of Italian chamber music while shining a light on rarely performed works by Italian women composers such as Isabella Leonarda and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani.

Filmed in February 2026, this video features Merula’s Ciaccona, performed by new Calder Consort members Andrew Taheny and Charlie Roberts (violins), together with long-standing members Matthew Phillips (cello) and Dylan McCaig (director and continuo).

Our thanks to Liverpool Cathedral for generously allowing us to film in the beautiful Lady Chapel.

We’re pleased to share more rehearsal footage from our recording project, which explores some of the great figures of Italian chamber music, with a particular emphasis on lesser-known works by Italian female composers such as Isabella Leonarda and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani.

Filmed in August 2025 at the very beginning of the project, this video features Monteverdi’s Zefiro Torna arranged for string duo, performed by new Calder Consort member Charlie Roberts (violin), alongside long-standing members Matthew Phillips (cello) and Dylan McCaig (director/continuo).

This is Calder Consort, and we’re back with an exciting new project! We are currently working towards a recording project featuring music by some of the great figures of Italian chamber music. At the heart of this project is a focus on lesser-known works by Italian female composers such as Isabella Leonarda and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani.

Joining Calder as additional string players are Liverpool-based early musicians Charlie Roberts, who works as a tutor with Early Music as Education (EMAE), and Andrew Taheny, who also works with EMAE and Manchester Baroque. More details to come soon!
