16th June Bloomsday 1976

Bronze in an edition of 5

For Joyce fans around the world, 16 June offers a special opportunity to honour and celebrate the life and work of James Joyce, particularly his 1922 novel Ulysses, now widely regarded as one of the most important works of modernist literature.
Set over the course of a single day in Dublin, 16 June 1904, the novel follows the experiences of its central character, Leopold Bloom. Significantly, this date also marks the day Joyce himself went on his first outing with Nora Barnacle, who would later become his wife.

Claire Magill, Conservator, has carefully restored this large plaster artwork by sculptor Frederick Edward McWilliam. This sculpture is over 60 years old and needed specialist restoration.

Claire worked to stabilise, repair and revive the piece, ensuring it could once again be appreciated by the public. Conservation like this not only restores the physical work, but also safeguards the legacy of one of Northern Ireland’s most celebrated artists.

Watch below as Claire shares her insights into the restoration journey.

This piece will be on display in the new F.E. McWilliam Permanent Collection Gallery, opening soon.
