Hardly a piping tune but no matter, we're here to celebrate Gary Brooker's birthday today and his part in founding the photo prog rock band Procul Harum. While being the lead singer he was equally adept on the organ, trombone, cornet, piano accordion and Bengal flute. Composed in 1967 their single A Whiter Shade of Pale was one of very few singles to sell over 10 million copies and it remains as everlastingly fresh as the Bach music it was based upon.

Of these catalogues of recent exhibitions spanning 700 years, which comes to the desert island .. hmm .. float on the Gainsborough and take Nicholson perhaps? All superb shows in their own right.

It is always such a thrill to view paintings by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) and these two I was seeing for the first time in the flesh, selfie and the Hay Wagon from the collection, both on show at the Courtauld. The self portrait was historically thought to be the hand of TG's nephew Gainsborough Dupont but recent scholarship has duly ascribed it to the master himself.

The cricket wheel comes full circle today when 12 year old junior curator plays his first ever game with players of his own age and also the first match for his school Under 15s against Fettes. The second photo shows yours truly playing his last game of cricket for his school, also at Fettes, 51 years ago on 5 July 1975, the day Arthur Ashe beat Jimmy Connors in the biggest shock in Wimbledon history .. I never did see the game. Good luck, junior curator, and may the ball swing seamlessly!

After 26 years I am sad to say goodbye to these two poignant reminders of Captain Scott's heroic adventure aboard Discovery on the way to Antarctica and subsequent death in 1912. The photo was taken by Herbert Ponting in Scott's hut at Cape Evans in October 1911 as he was writing his journal, pipe in hand. Scott was probably the last of his three companions to die on March 29 1912 in the small tent where they were found by the search party, 12 miles from the safety of One Ton Depot having been beaten to the South Pole by Roald Amundsen. For nine days the three's progress had been impossible with blizzard conditions and temps of -40C raging outside and they wrote their farewell letters and quietly lay down to die. I'd like to think that this pipe gave Scott succour in the last moments of his life. The two items are off to Canterbury Museum in Christchurch NZ where they will occupy pride of place.

❄️❄️❄️

Farewell to this relic of living history, if a pipe could tell a thousand words then imagine what unimaginable suffering and heroism this object could tell us.
