A colourful detail from a painting depicting the charge of the Highlanders on Drummossie Moor, Culloden, on 16 April 1746. The rest of the large painting will be unfurled in a later post but these fighting men in tartan, accompanied by the skirl of the pipes, must have been a fearsome sight for the redcoats.

It's been a sporty three days before the new term. First up was the first round of junior curator's tennis club championship, a close match successfully navigated, second up was an exciting cricket game at Methlick for Crathie CC and post match analysis in the local alehouse while today saw a change of strip for a rugby match against Aberdeen Grammar which came with the usual knocks along the way.

Junior curator was slightly put out with the appearance recently of these corrugated iron cows cramping his rugby style on the front lawn. Made by the sculptor Jeff Thomson they were brought back from New Zealand by Billy Connolly who discovered them during one of his trips around the world for television; they adorned his Scottish home for many years. We sold them a decade ago and they are now up for offer again.

🌱🌱🌱

Thomson has had exhibitions in Australia and Germany and while his sculptures are often seen in NZ his animals are rarely seen in this country. His work is unconventional, humorous and monumental and he is one of NZ's most original contemporary artists and they make an exciting addition to the gallery.

Junior curator had a day to remember yesterday playing in a league game for Crathie CC in Aberdeen. Coming in at 6, joining his Dad, he batted for 21 overs in compiling an impressive 30, his highest score in an adult game. Removed their main batter in a wicket maiden and with a catch on the run it was quite a day.
