From a first life class at 15 to the Royal Academy Schools in Piccadilly — Mark Clark’s work has always come back to the human figure.
With over 20 trips to India, the vibrancy of Rajasthan and Gujarat continues to fuel his palette, while studio life drawing sharpens every line, mood, and moment of light.

Known for draughtsmanship and detail, Mark works across charcoal, pan pastels, oil on copper, and silverpoint — always chasing that connection between image and biography.

Silverpoint is an ancient drawing technique that dates back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It involves drawing with a sharpened silver stylus on a specially prepared surface, leaving a faint metal line that slowly darkens as it oxidises. The marks are permanent and cannot be erased, which brings a real sense of honesty and discipline to the process.

Compared to charcoal or pencil, silverpoint is delicate and restrained. It slows everything down. Every line has to be considered. There is very little tonal range and no room for correction, and that limitation is exactly what makes it so compelling to me.

I’m particularly drawn to using silverpoint for faces. Without strong contrasts, the focus shifts to expression, structure, and feeling. Small changes in line can suggest mood in a quiet, intimate way, which feels perfectly suited to studying the human face.

I really enjoyed working on this drawing of a lovely collie. Such a beautiful dog and pleasure to bring to life on paper. This was a special commission for a client and I'm delighted with how it turned out.🐾

His drawing really captures every inch of my girlfriend's beauty, truly representing all my feelings toward her and how I perceive her in my eyes. It almost feels like the drawing can speak on its own.

The first commission I received since launching my new website was from Dysan Aufar, in Indonesia. It was such a pleasure to work with him on creating this artwork for his girlfriend so far away.
