Quick pre-event check: make sure your phone’s device clock is accurate. Timed entry slots, one-time passcodes (OTPs) for ticket portals, timed QR or parking sessions, wallet passes and, in some cases, contactless payments may be validated against it. 🔒

On iPhone: Settings > General > Date & Time > switch on Set Automatically, then check the Time Zone.

On Android: Settings > System > Date & time > switch on Set time automatically or Use network-provided time. Samsung and other manufacturers may use a different path, such as Settings > General management > Date and time.

Menu wording, default settings and availability vary by device, OS version, manufacturer, carrier, app and region. If the network does not provide the time, syncing may need a brief moment on Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Before you leave:
1. Turn on automatic date and time.
2. Confirm the correct time zone.
3. Open your ticket or pass and check that it shows as valid.

Before arriving at a busy event, review your nearby file-sharing settings to reduce unwanted AirDrop or Quick Share requests.

On iPhone, go to Settings > General > AirDrop and choose Receiving Off, Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes. On Android, open Quick Share settings and review who can discover your device, such as Your devices, Contacts or Everyone. Exact labels and available options vary by device, operating system, app, manufacturer, account and region.

In public places and shared event spaces, use the most restricted suitable option. Accept only files you are expecting, check the sender and file details carefully, and do not open anything unexpected.

At a large showground, festival site or multi-storey car park, take 30 seconds when you arrive to record where you parked and which gate you used.

• Save your parking spot with a map pin, such as Google Maps’ “Save your parking”, or use a dropped pin and Apple Maps’ parked-car feature where available.
• Photograph the bay number, row letter, level or nearest landmark, plus the car-park entrance sign.
• Note the gate or entrance and car-park zone in your phone’s Notes app or the event in your calendar.

Do this before you lose signal or battery, and keep the note available offline. GPS can drift, and multi-storey car parks are often poorly mapped, so a photo and written note are more reliable than a pin alone. If you need help, stewards and volunteers can find you faster when you can name the zone, gate and nearest landmark.

Before sending an exhibitor, organiser, supplier or fellow attendee’s contact, check exactly what you’re sharing.

On iPhone: open Contacts, tap the person, choose Share Contact, review the available fields, remove anything unnecessary, then select the sharing method and recipient. On Android, Google Contacts may share the details stored on the contact card, while Samsung and other manufacturers may offer different options such as text or a .vcf file. If field-by-field controls are unavailable, copy and send only the required name, work number, email address or company details instead.

Do not send a home address, birthday, personal notes, extra phone numbers or private email address unless there is a clear reason and consent. Before tapping Send, check the recipient, destination app and whether you are sending a message, text or contact file. Avoid sharing sensitive details over public or untrusted networks.

Before sharing an event photo publicly, check whether it includes location data.

On iPhone, open Photos, tap Share > Options, then turn off Location before sharing. Where supported, you can also review or remove a photo’s location from the Info screen.

On Android, Google Photos and other gallery apps may offer “Remove location” or location-sharing controls. Menus vary by manufacturer, app, Android version and account, so check the options available on your device.

Screenshots, edited copies, messaging apps and social platforms can handle metadata differently. Check the final shared copy and avoid posting sensitive operational images, such as backstage areas, staff locations or equipment layouts.

Removing metadata does not make an image anonymous. Faces, badges, signs and background details can still identify people or places. For example, a photo of an exhibitor setup could reveal a restricted area or a staff member’s location.

Protect your inbox when signing up at events.

Venue Wi-Fi portals, exhibitor competitions, newsletter stands and event-app registrations can all lead to unwanted mailing lists. A masked or alias email keeps your primary inbox, and less of your identity, exposed.

• iPhone/iOS: With iCloud+, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Hide My Email. You can create an address, see which app or website used it and deactivate it later. You may also see Hide My Email through Sign in with Apple when creating an account.

• Android and other devices: There is usually no built-in equivalent. Reputable services such as DuckDuckGo Email Protection or Firefox Relay can forward an alias to your normal inbox. Some providers also support plus-addressing, such as yourname+event@.... Menu names and availability vary by device, operating system, browser, service, account type and region.

Use your real, monitored address for tickets, invoices, booking confirmations, volunteer rotas and accessibility requests. Aliases may not deliver attachments, and some portals reject them. Only create one through the official event website or app; check the web address and developer name first. Never enter payment details on a page you do not trust: a masked email does not make an unverified page safe. If an alias attracts junk, deactivate it rather than abandoning your main address.

📱 Daily Mobile Tech Tip for Events

Can’t find the check-in, exhibitor or volunteer controls on an official event website? Try its desktop view.

On iPhone Safari, tap the page menu in the address bar, then choose “Request Desktop Website”. In Android Chrome, open the three-dot menu and select “Desktop site”. Menu names and availability can vary by device, operating system, browser, language and region.

This can reveal fuller forms, upload buttons, floor-plan tools or account settings, but it won’t fix a site that genuinely needs a computer. Use only the official event domain, check the address carefully, and never sign in on a shared or public device. Switch back to the mobile view afterwards if it’s easier to use.

Travelling to a multi-day event? Back up your phone before you leave so tickets, event documents, photos and contacts are less likely to disappear if your phone is lost, damaged or stolen.

iPhone: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Check the “Last successful backup” date and time.

Android: Settings > Google > Backup (or Settings > System > Backup). Use Google One and check when the last backup completed.

Do it before travelling, on your own trusted home or venue Wi-Fi. Plug in your phone, keep it charged and wait for the backup to finish. Backups may take time, use power, and some devices only back up over Wi-Fi or need sufficient battery.

Free cloud storage may not hold a large event photo or video library, so offload it to your own computer or external drive too, or instead.
