David Hockney (1937-2026) was a titan of British and international art.

Upon hearing news of his passing, I couldn’t not share my own thoughts about him. His influence stretched far and wide, and extended to my own family in ways you might not expect.

Then there’s his own perspective on becoming deaf in adulthood - the effect on me, as a Deaf artist, of which shouldn’t be underestimated.

Remember the art on an envelope that I exhibited, and sold on the first day, of the Letter in Mind fundraiser organised by the National Brain Appeal ( ) a few months ago?

The buyer, who has asked to remain anonymous, sent me photos of the work that now hangs in their beautiful home. It’s a truly exciting moment for me and I’m touched by their care. 💖🥹

*NEW PAINTING*

“Cousins at Play II,” 2026. Watercolour, Posca pen and fine liner on Langton watercolour paper 305 x 229mm.

I’ve spent a week playing with various earthy, orange-red and violet tones to get the distinctive faded look of a much-loved Seventies family photo (yes that’s me out front, piling on my uncle Simon along with my older sister and two aunts). Swipe left for a close-up and to see work in progress.

The red stripe comes directly from a photo processing error on the original, and I feel it helps reinforce the vintage edge even while bringing the painting up to date.

Critics can debate the merits of painting from photos all they like, but there’s plenty of joy to be had in focussing on colour and quirk rather than likeness.
