Mapping Caerffili | Mapio Caerffili

Artist Sebastien Boyesen is creating a detailed relief map of Caerffili town, filled with local history, hidden references and legendary Caerffili characters.

The map brings together centuries of stories — from castle battles and Welsh folklore to Tommy Cooper and the S*x Pistols — in one sculptural procession through the town.

A wax replica has now been taken from the original clay sculpture, and a Corten steel plinth for the final artwork has been shaped.

Over the coming weeks we’ll share more behind-the-scenes glimpses into the making process.

The Caerffili Town Relief Map is commissioned through the Caerphilly Town 2035 Placemaking Plan. Ginkgo Projects is working with Stride Treglown to embed culture and public art into the town’s future regeneration plans.

Adam Blencowe’s new public commission for LO42 Avon Street, Bristol is beginning to take shape.

Inspired by the industrial history of Avon Street, once home to the Panther Lead and Silver Works, a riverside foundry that operated for more than 100 years, Adam's commission translates hidden industrial processes into sculptural forms within today’s landscape.

Positioned beside the river, the works are designed as places to gather and spend time, quietly carrying traces of the site’s past into the present.

The artist recently visited the timber yard at Howard Gibbons Reclamation in Exford, where reclaimed Opepe timber — previously used within a railway bridge — was selected for the commission. Each piece is checked for concealed metal fixings before being re-milled to reveal the timber’s vibrant natural colour.

Outside Adam’s workshop at Cutterne Mill, Evercreech, bronze elements referencing foundry processes are being tested and assembled. Components are arranged to check scale and proportion, while an initial test piece has been installed to confirm the mounting and drainage system.

More soon from the workshop and making process!

The bronze pour & shell smashing đŸ”„đŸ”š

Artist Dorcas Casey joined the team at Castle Fine Arts Foundry in Oswestry for an exciting stage in making her deer sculpture for Trinity Road.

The ceramic moulds are heated and prepared for the pour, supported in ceramic sand. The furnace is loud as the bronze melts in a crucible, then the space falls quiet as the bronze is poured with total concentration. After a few hours, it cools and sets.

🔹The brittle ceramic shell is then broken away with sledgehammers, revealing the cast within.

Every surface detail – from Dorcas’ original clay modelling to the textures of familiar clothing fabrics – is captured and carried through into the final piece.

(See previous posts for earlier stages in the process, from pink silicone to green wax and ceramic shell.)

Green molten wax, painted in layers, builds up the form. A system of wax funnels and channels is then added, which will guide the bronze into the mould during casting.

Layers of ceramic ‘shell’ are built up around the wax to form a new mould, then the wax is melted out ready for the bronze pour.

This is the ancient lost-wax bronze-casting process
