Another Memento Mori, but I’m back to using my beloved coloured pencils on drafting film.
This one will be surrounded by wildflowers and may feature a creature or two. It’s inspired by my thoughts on the responsibilities of land ownership which will talk more about as the drawing develops.

I don’t take on many pet portraits these days, so the ones I do are always extra special. 🤍

This is Bear, who was an absolute joy to draw. It was such an honour to be trusted with capturing his character.

Thank you for asking me to create this piece. I hope it will be treasured for many years to come.

I am really bad at selling my art (and making videos). Give me a shout for more info on any of these before I put them on Etsy. They can all be mounted and/or framed. 😘

Stippled ink study of a memento mori from a tomb in St Guthlac’s churchyard in Astwick.

The inscription saying who the tomb belongs to is sadly so weathered that it is no longer possible to read, but my research suggests that it could be someone from the Cockayne family, a prominent Bedfordshire family, perhaps Elizabeth Cockayne, who lived from 1617–1673.

I would love to know why they covered her tomb with such an elaborate memento mori.

One thing that did strike me whilst I was drawing it was that I am perhaps the first person to have followed these lines so closely since the stone carver made them in the 17th century.

I wrote a long caption about creative block, trying new things, and imposter syndrome… but it felt a bit too vulnerable for the internet so I deleted it.
I’m about halfway through this piece and I really love it, it’s been so helpful for me.
I don’t think this is a one-off, so if you know any good memento mori in your local graveyard let me know.
