Well, this is a slightly different shop update…

We got married 🩶

If you’ve noticed I’ve been a little more hands off than usual over the last couple of weeks, this is why.

Handmade Design has been such a huge part of my life for so many years, so having a few photos outside the shop while we were in Ashbourne felt very fitting.

Very low key, very us and now back to our regular posts about cards, jewellery and me moving displays around for absolutely no reason.

New designer alert! 🩶

I’ve had my eye on Rebecca’s beautiful designs for a while now. We’ve crossed paths a few times at Fabulous Places markets, but finally got the chance to have a proper chat at Harrogate last month…

Her first delivery has now arrived at Handmade Design and it’s so lovely.

We’ve got her gorgeous little botanical prints in brass frames, A4 prints, cards and tote bags — all with Rebecca’s delicate, nature inspired illustrations.

The little framed pieces might be my favourites though. Each one has its own meaning — dandelion for hope, zinnia for friendship, gypsophila for everlasting love, robin for messengers — making them such a lovely little gift when you find the one that feels just right for someone.

Not every Sunday comes with classic cars parked right outside the shop… 😍

Yesterday Ashbourne was absolutely buzzing, with beautiful classic cars filling Victoria Square, the Market Place and Shrovetide Walk. It was so lovely to see the town so busy — and even lovelier that we had our second best Sunday ever in the shop!

A huge thank you to everyone who popped in, had a browse or shopped with us. Days like this are such a brilliant reminder of what a special town Ashbourne is 🩶

New in the shop… and they’re every bit as good as they look 🤤🩶

We’ve just welcomed Sawley Kitchen to Handmade Design – an artisan family run Yorkshire bakery baking from vintage family recipes.

Their Classic All Butter Shortbread has been awarded a Great Taste Award.

We’ve finally admitted defeat… 😅

After years of collecting display pieces, vintage finds, furniture and all sorts of interesting bits and bobs, it’s finally time for a proper basement clear out.

One of my favourite times of day in the shop is when the sun finally reaches us ☀️

We spend most of the day in the shade, but by late afternoon the light pours through the windows and creates the loveliest shadows around the shop.

Well… we weren’t expecting quite that reaction! 🩶

Our brand new Mareike▪️Wirral metalsmith and silversmithing teacher collection only arrived yesterday and you’ve already snapped up three pieces in just a few hours of them being out on display!

Handmade on the Wirral by talented metalsmith By Maraca, each piece is carefully crafted using traditional silversmithing techniques, reimagined in beautiful brass. The result is a collection of modern, sculptural jewellery that’s timeless, lightweight and designed to be worn every day.

Brass naturally develops a soft, warm patina over time rather than turning black like silver can. If you prefer that bright golden finish, it only takes a quick polish with a little Brasso to bring it straight back to life – we’re talking seconds, not hours!

We’re already getting more pieces made as quickly as we can (along with a few brand new designs we couldn’t resist ordering! 🤭), but for now, every piece in the shop is a one-off, so if you’ve had your eye on something, don’t leave it too long

Our Citronella Incense Sticks have had a little top up! ☀️

These have been one of our surprise hits over the last few weeks, with so many of you using them to help deter flies while you’re making the most of the garden.

We’ve loved hearing how you’re using them too! One customer told us she simply fills a terracotta plant pot with sand and pops the incense stick in the middle - such a simple idea if you’re spending the evening outdoors. (Although if you’d prefer something a little prettier, we do have some lovely handmade incense holders in stock too! 🩶)

Each incense stick is hand dipped here in the UK and you can choose from a whole range of lovely scents.

If you’re planning some time in the garden this weekend, don’t forget to add a few Citronella sticks to your basket!
