Our last, but by no means least, artist is Veni Smith. Veni makes watercolour paintings about the minutiae of every day life - pub-goers conversing, figures in an allotment or simply sitting at home engaged in the ordinary, all portrayed with a keen observance that offers a joyful outlook. There are still lives and topsy-turvy buildings too, all equally rendered with swift, expressive strokes and a strong sense of colour; her paintings bring uplift, charm and delight in equal measure.

Also at the Vic is Elizabeth Russell.
She left Camberwell School of Art and Crafts with a degree in Woven Textiles and Fashion and spent her career in the fashion business, specialising in knitwear. She is now a textile artist creating handwoven artworks, tapestries and bags and mostly works on her 16-shaft loom using British wool, mohair, alpaca and hand dyed silk and cotton.

Delighted to welcome back Johannah Muriel. Johannah’s one of a kind, mixed-media studies combine gestural marks with abstract or geometric shape formations, to produce layers of movement and texture. Her prints are the result of instinctive reactions to natural references- conveying her emotional reaction to an environment, rather than trying to replicate it literally. Areas of varnish and detailed hand-embroidery manifests on paper into organic forms and compositional features, encouraging the viewer to investigate each layer of the work.

Michael James is an entirely self-taught wood turner specialising in using locally grown but not necessarily native timbers. He is particularly interested in timber with faults, flaws and dramatic features. Reclaimed hardwood is of course a welcome subject. In recent years the effects obtained with mica coloured resins have become an obsession inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi where faults and damage are celebrated as part of the life story of the piece. As well as being striking and beautiful, the majority of his pieces are food-safe and of practical use.

Colleen Conti is a Sussex-based Landscape painter who has taught Art for 4 decades years and led an Art Department for 2 of them. She retired in 2020 to focus on her own work and has since exhibited regularly, being selected for several prestigious National Exhibitions. Colleen’s inspiration comes from being ‘in nature’ and the heightened awareness of both that moment in time and of times past. She is fascinated by the way memories surface in response to the physical sensations of being in a place. Colleen is interested in both the broad expanse and the intimate close-up view; both natural and cultivated aspects of the landscape and how they connect us to our history. Colleen’s work is affected by the changing light, forms, and colours of the landscape through the seasons.

Also is Ellie Bond. Ellie plays with shape, colour and composition to form her designs, each one ending up a unique work of art. While focusing on glass, Ellie’s designs have taken on an illustrative quality, showing how she likes to draw with the material.
Ellie also co-runs the Art Foundation course at Northbrook College, during her career as an Artist and Art teacher she has taken various workshops in schools and for the general public. Being surrounded by the spontaneous and raw work being created within her mixed media workshops brings a renewed energy and a rich source of inspiration into her own practice as an Artist.

Our walk is coming to an end but at the beginning with the Trail’s Venue No.1. The Vic, the Victoria Institute in the heart of Arundel . As their website says:
She’s had more lives than a cat. From one of Sussex’s first saving banks in 1847 to snooker hall, then Sunday lunch club. From laundry and library to dance hall and disco. Today, The Vic is home to artists, and art classes, yoga and dance classes, theatre, creative workshops and community events. When you step through the front door of The Vic, you enter the heart of Arundel’s artistic and creative world.

And this seems a fitting place to stay and look around during the run up to the opening of the 2026 Arundel Gallery Trail

Lucy Beale works with oil paint on canvas and paper, Lucy takes inspiration from time spent in the Sussex countryside and coast with her family. Lucy’s work balances abstraction and landscape, drawing from the colour, movement and emotion of time spent outdoors with her family. Pieces evolve through process allowing colour, form and instinct to lead the way, The ever changing light and the transient nature of the surroundings of the South Downs are a constant source of inspiration.
