A heartfelt note 🗒️ to my 18 year old self🩷 & some advice to anyone that dares to do something different in this town.
I remember sitting at the dinner table at the naive age of 18 telling my mum & dad I wanted to open a dance & drama club in the town.
I didn’t really have anything bar a large CD player & a heart full of passion. 12 years later, the kids/ teens that attend my classes have performed shows in venues all over Armagh displaying their amazing talents on stage. Is it ok to look back, & say I’m proud? - yes it is 🩷 However, with starting my little business - it has came with many challenges that I have grown to face down the years.
To those thinking of starting something new.. get ready… 💥 💥 🥁
Be ready for the critics, the negative ones & yep.. the people that you just couldn’t please. I’v found down the years, my energy & enthusiasm is too much for some people & that’s ok. 🙂
BUT… please please please, don’t allow them to cast shadows on the many people & kids that you DO inspire & that do appreciate you & your service.
The ones that show up consistently to rehearsals, the ones that enjoy your mentorship, the parents who are thankful for your contribution to their child’s personal development & confidence.
A drama club? Some people have laughed in the past. Sure thats easy work? Yet, it’s probably those people who have never experienced the challenging side of self employment. No one ever sees the work you do in the background, the sleepless nights & 3am wake ups before show day wondering if all will work out.
No one will see the long hours you put into designing rehearsal schedules, painting 🎨 sets, choreographing dance routines, writing🖋️ scripts, editing music and so on. The pressure at times is over whelming & to all those self employed .. respect for all that put in those extra hours to make their little business thrive.🩷
When I have mentioned performing arts some have replied, ‘Drama’? Why the frig would you study that in university?
Yet, so many fail to realise the importance of the arts & those extra curricular activities that are so often over looked by our system today. Drama 🎭 itself provides kids with lifelong skills & confidence that will help them in their future life. Dance & improvisation gives them a platform to express themselves & through social interaction & fun filled classes - it engages kids/ teenagers in a way that is healthy for their minds & self esteem.
If you run a club or something within this community whether it be sport, art, music 🎵 or in my case dance & drama 🎭… never downplay your contribution to trying to make a difference in this town.
Over the years - I have faced many challenges & have learned how to stand in the eyes of adversity - especially last year forming a new adult drama 🎭 group - yet I somehow still continued to shine my light & do what I love.
For a long time I guess I didn’t realise my worth. But I guess at the mature old age of 30 now.., I can look back on the past 12 years & be proud of the 18 year old girl that started all this in beginning 🩷
I am so thankful for all the members (past & present) that have passed through my doors & supported the club down the years. Yes, Armagh & any place in general has its negative Ned’s - but it also has some of the most supportive & kindest people in it too🩷. So, I urge those that dare to do anything different in this town to go for it & please do not let a seldom few dim your sparkle, keep on making a positive difference no matter how small & keep dreaming BIG ✨
