Our facilities include: a state of the art, 400-seat proscenium arch theatre as well as a 50-seat fully equipped studio theatre. We also have professional front of house services

including: full time box office; bar; kiosk and substantial car-parking. On the whole the operation is run by volunteers, with a team of paid staff. We also operate Garrick Academy of Performing Arts, a venture giving young people a foundation in the disciplines of performance. We stage at least twelve full scale, in-house productions each season in the main house and a number of smaller scale productions in the studio theatre. Our productions include dramas, musicals, pantomime and comedy. We also have a thriving group of amateur visiting societies, who hire the theatre to stage their own productions. Additionally, we commercially hire out the facilities to professional touring productions and for corporate purposes.

Written by Patrick Marber
Directed by Pete Brassington

Four characters—Dan, Anna, Larry, and Alice—navigate love, desire, and betrayal. A quartet of strangers in a sexual square dance, their story unfolds over the span of four years.

Closer presents a biting commentary on intimacy, connection, and the often destructive consequences of human interaction. It is an unflinching examination of love’s darker side.

As relationships spark, fracture, and shift, the characters circle each other in a brutal game of seduction and confession. Through this roller-coaster of infidelity and deceit, Marber’s anti-romantic romantic comedy offers a cynical, and painfully accurate analysis of love in the modern day.

Closer premiered at the Royal National Theatre's Cottesloe Theatre in London in 1997. The play has been described as a work that gets under its audience's skin, and “not for the emotionally squeamish, a work in which Marber is alert to the cruel inequalities of love...”

Content Warning: this production contains strong and sexually explicit language, adult themes, and scenes of a sexual and violent nature.

We are a diverse theatre and we welcome auditionees of all ages (above the age of 18) and all genders, ethnicities, sexualities, disabilities and races, to enrich the work of the production.

Information on how to get involved and what to prepare can be found on the auditions page on our website ⬇️

We are always open to welcoming new actors to our Theatre, as well as welcoming back familiar faces!

Written by Florian Zeller
Translated by Christopher Hampton
Directed by Jonathan Barker

“I don’t know what’s happened... But something has. He’s changed.”

17-year-old Nicolas is going through a difficult phase since his parents’ divorce. He’s started lying and become listless, skipping school and locking himself away.

Feeling unable to live with his mother anymore, he moves in with his father and his new family. Maybe that will help? A new school, a fresh start.

But what if it doesn’t? What then?

This play unflinchingly explores how those suffering often struggle to understand their own inner demons.

A powerful examination of adolescence and the disruptive dynamics of family life.

Florian Zeller’s The Son completes a trilogy with The Mother and The Father (produced at Altrincham Garrick Playhouse in 2024), all of which are translated by Christopher Hampton. The Son premiered at the Kiln Theatre, London, in February 2019, and transferred to the Duke of York’s Theatre in August. A film version, directed by Zeller himself, and starring Hugh Jackman, Vanessa Kirkby and Anthony Hopkins, was produced in 2022.

This production is part of the Garrick Studio 26/27 Season - A Season of Connection: Stories that bind us, break us, and bring us back together.

Age Guidance: 15 +

Content Warning: This play depicts adolescent mental health issues and discussions of self-harm. The production contains scenes some audience members may find distressing.
