Our final soloist is Joanna Forbes L'Estrange. Tickets still available if you want to see all these fantastic soloists perform with us THIS SATURDAY!
Joanna Forbes L’Estrange (soprano) is a celebrated British vocalist, composer, and conductor renowned for her stylistic versatility, consummate musicianship, and three-octave vocal range. Her career, which began with seven years at the helm of the five-time GrammyĀ® Award-winning vocal group The Swingle Singers, has taken her to every corner of the globe.
At London’s iconic Abbey Road Studios, Joanna records soundtracks for film, television, and video games. Television appearances include this year’s Audi commercial, Alice and Hugo’s wedding in The Vicar of Dibley, and being a judge on the Sky1 series SING: Ultimate A Ca****la. Joanna performs 20th-century masterpieces by composers such as Berio and Stockhausen, and later this year will appear in Steve Reich’s 90th birthday concert in New York, performing Tehillim with three other vocalists and the New York Philharmonic. With the chamber choir Tenebrae she recorded twenty-five albums and, with her jazz duo L’Estranges in the Night, provides entertainment for private and corporate events. She is a regular soloist for Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert and Will Todd’s Mass in Blue which she recorded for the Convivium label.*
Among Joanna’s best-selling compositions are A Season to Sing, a choral re-imagining of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, and The Mountains Shall Bring Peace, an anthem commissioned for the coronation of King Charles III. The former became an immediate international success, receiving over fifty performances across five continents in its first year, including at the Sydney Opera House under the composer’s baton. The tuneful, singable quality of her choral music has inspired reviews including ā€œForbes L’Estrange seems to have been born with catchy melodies coursing through her veinsā€ (BBC Music), ā€œa sublime blend of catchy and comfortingā€ (Hyperion), and ā€œfull of delicious ear-wormsā€ (Gramophone).
In 2025, she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal School of Church Music.
* CDs will be on sale after the performance.

Up next to join on 11th July for our summer concert is Alexander L’Estrange. Tickets still available. L'Estrange Music Joanna Forbes L'Estrange

Alexander L’Estrange (double bass) is a world-renowned composer, arranger, jazz musician, choral animateur and music producer. The international success of his flagship choral work Zimbe! Come, sing the songs of Africa!, an ingenious fusion of jazz with African song for SATB choir, unison children’s choir and jazz quintet, has spawned a series of pieces with the same scoring. Tens of thousands of primary school children have sung in performances of these works, a legacy that reflects his deep commitment to music education and young voices.

The latest piece in the series, Wellspring! The Way of Water, was written in collaboration with his wife Joanna for the 90th anniversary of Millfield School and was first performed by hundreds of school children from across Somerset in Wells Cathedral last year. It will receive its American premiĆØre next May with a concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall given by massed choirs from all over the world accompanied by Alexander’s professional band, The Call Me Al Quintet. Alexander’s sacred anthems feature on an album called On Eagles’ Wings recorded by Tenebrae for the Signum label. Following its release he was dubbed ā€œthe added 9th of contemporary choral musicā€ in a review by Hyperion Records, reflecting his penchant for jazz harmonies within the context of church music.

A prolific arranger for vocal groups including Voces 8 and The King’s Singers Alexander was also the chief arranger and Consultant Editor for Faber Music’s acclaimed Choral Basics series. He was the first person to write the arrangements for an entire King’s Singers album -Great American Songbook - for which he was also the producer. Alexander writes and records television production music from his home studio in Hertfordshire. He also offers a unique and bespoke service to chorister families, creating professional recordings of their children as a wonderful memento of their unchanged voices.

Meet our next soloist…

Felix Higginbottom (drums) is an internationally recognised drummer & percussionist working extensively within the classical, pop and jazz industries. Felix is a musician whose sonic imagination, global fluency, and genre-defying versatility have shaped a unique voice. His work draws on a palette of rare hand-percussion and custom-built instruments, many of his own design, creating sound worlds that audiences are unlikely to have heard or seen before. A chorister with world-renowned New College Choir Oxford, Felix then trained with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Royal Academy of Music, and at King’s College London. Time in Rio de Janeiro expanded his mastery of global percussion traditions, whilst mentorship from world-renown musician Robert ā€œSputā€ Searight propelled him into international touring and recording.

Performance credits include; Grammy-winning jazz artist Snarky Puppy and Bill Laurance, The Philharmonia, London Contemporary Orchestra, Academy Of Ancient Music; and his role as featured percussion soloist under Sir Karl Jenkins in major international concerts. His recording career includes Songhoy Blues, BANKS, TEED, and Julian Lennon, as well as major film and game soundtracks including Back to Black, FIFA and Fortnite. As a composer he has over 50million streams and accolades including Amazon Music’s ā€˜Best Song of 2021’.

Alongside classical repertoire, Felix is regular performer at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, a founding member of critically acclaimed art-rock group Low Island, and currently touring with the seminal English folk band Stornoway. Sought after as a composer, producer and soloist, his unmistakable language, at once rooted in deep tradition and boldly innovative, has made Felix one of the most compelling and fast-rising musicians of his generation.

With a week to go to our summer concert, it’s time to meet our soloists. First up Harry L’Estrange.

Harry L’Estrange (piano) is a multi-genre multi-instrumentalist who is poised to take up a choral scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge, to study Music. His prodigious musical talent has been evident since the age of 6 when he performed Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe, and Vivaldi’s Double Violin Concerto…all from memory. The following year he won the junior category of St Albans Young Musician of the Year before becoming a chorister in the prestigious choir of St John’s College, Cambridge. For five years, as well as singing daily services in the college chapel, he went on concert tours in Europe and Asia and made several recordings, becoming Head Chorister in his final year.

Having achieved Grade 8 distinctions on both the violin and piano by the time he was 11 Harry was awarded a Music Scholarship to Bedford School where his musical education continued to flourish. He studied jazz piano, first with Nikki Iles and then with Harry Baker, joined the National Youth Jazz Collective and soon began receiving professional engagements in London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, the Mayfield Festival and the Redon Jazz Festival in France. For the past three years Harry has been the organist at his local church of St Helen’s in Wheathampstead, improvising a voluntary every Sunday morning!

Harry is also a gifted composer and arranger. His first composition, a setting of The Souls of the Righteous, won the Choir Schools Association Composition Competition. O Virgo Virginum, his second composition was described by Sir John Rutter on Radio 3 as ā€œan absolutely perfect little carolā€. He wrote several winning arrangements for Bedford School’s annual House Singing Competition and has recently been commissioned by Oxford University’s jazz a ca****la group The Gargoyles to arrange the jazz standard Dat Dere for their Edinburgh Festival tun this summer. Later this year he makes his first appearance at Ronnie Scott’s and 2027 sees his Carnegie Hall debut.
