Thank you to everyone who joined us for our fantastic Spring Exhibition yesterday. With the sunshine making it even more special, it was wonderful to see our talented students sharing their work with friends and family. The quality of the artwork was truly impressive!
Sarah and I are so proud of all the hard work that has gone into this term and couldn’t be prouder of our students.
We’re now looking ahead to our Summer Course, starting in just a few weeks, and can’t wait to welcome both returning and new students.

Week 12 – Sun Through the Trees
This was our final painting of the course, focusing on dappled light filtering through the trees and casting bold, dynamic shadows across building facades. Students explored clever colour combinations to create atmosphere and a sense of depth through the application of colour theory. This final project brought together everything learned throughout the course—composition, tonal balance, brushwork, and thoughtful colour choices. The emphasis was on achieving colour harmony while capturing the effect of dappled light, resulting in vibrant and expressive paintings by all the students. Amazing work and what a wonderful project for the end of the Spring term.

Week 11: Alpine Waterfall. This week the students painted a dramatic alpine waterfall cascading through rocky terrain and lush greenery. They explored a range of techniques, including different brushes, palette knives and sponging to build texture and create the effect of movement and form. Using a cool colour palette, they captured the flowing energy of the water alongside the solidity of the rocks creating depth contrast and a fresh, invigorating atmosphere that brings the scene to life. A brilliant effort from everyone, with striking and dynamic results. What a talented group we have! #

Week 10 – Impasto Oysters
This week’s project focused on the freedom and confidence of impasto painting, using oysters as the subject . By applying paint thickly and sculpturally, students explored texture, movement, and expressive paint handling. The organic shapes and reflective surfaces of the oyster shells provided a perfect opportunity to experiment without the pressure of strict realism. It was a wonderful exercise in building surface and enjoying the freedom of paint. The students did a fantastic job. ! #

Week 9. Our first week of acrylics - Tulips In Bloom . This vibrant still life study explores the beauty of tulips using mixed media, introducing vivid pastels layered over acrylic paint to create an almost luminous effect.
This session gave the students the opportunity to combine two different mediums while also practising their observation skills, resulting in a painterly piece rich in layers, texture, and colour. Fabulous work by all our very talented students. What a lovely fun sessioion this was ! #

Week Eight — Sunlit Quiet
In our final week of watercolour, we embrace stillness through a gentle, observational study. Using a limited palette, the work focuses on restraint and harmony, capturing a solitary figure by a quiet window. Dappled shadows fall across the space, evoking warmth, quiet, and the calm of a peaceful sunlit day. Rather than describing a specific place, the piece conveys a feeling — a moment where light softens and time seems to pause. All the students applied the techniques explored over the course, and their paintings were beautiful.

Week 7 – Echoes of Antiquity: Classical Architecture. This expressive watercolour study transported our students into the world of 19th-century interpretations of ancient architecture — from grand façades to time-worn Greek pillars. Working with a limited palette, students carefully mixed subtle stone tones and built depth through shadows and highlights using wet-in-wet and glazing techniques. Layered washes helped create a convincing sense of light and scale. It was a challenging project, but every student rose to it and did a brilliant job. A fantastic achievement and a wonderful way to strengthen structure, perspective, and form while embracing a looser, more painterly approach.

Week Six: French Classic in Provence
Our first watercolour of the term captured the charm of a French scene, playfully inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s The Yellow House. It was a wonderful opportunity to practise bold watercolour washes, followed by more intricate detailing on the buildings, with final touches added in black fineliner. The Foundation students focused on learning key watercolour techniques before producing their own beautiful monotone Misty Mountains. A challenging but thoroughly enjoyable week for everyone — brilliant work all round!

Week Five: Fields of Gold
Inspired by the work ofGeorge Seurat , our students learnt about pointillism and created bright, golden fields in this vibrant pointillism project. Using oil pastels, they built colour and texture through a dot-based technique, forming a dazzling summer landscape of rapeseed fields and sunshine. This project was both meditative and rewarding, showing how small, careful marks can come together to create luminous, richly textured fields of colour. All the students did truly fantastic work. What a fun project to end our Oil Pastel module!
