DID YOU KNOW??
In the early 1900's animals who strayed from their owners were taken and kept in a pinfold (an enclosure). People had to pay a fine to get them back. Can you guess how much that fine was?

As They Really Were – Keith Middlemas
Current price is: £10.00. (£25.00 Original price was: £25.00).

As They Really Were gives us a unique collection of drawings of ordinary people going about their business in the small town of Alnwick in the 1830’s and their stories. Amazing characters like Luke Skelley, professional hole-stopper pictured below. The skill of the artist and the quality of the reproduction gives us a clear view of their character. Each individual is brought back to life with infinite care, and this book is an invaluable pre-cursor to abilities of photography which followed soon after.

“Rather than produce “types” or caricatures Percy Forster’s drawings observe each individual with care” Sandy Nairne Director, National Portrait Gallery

Please note: This book would make and ideal gift. Stock is currently available but limited. Copies may be purchased to collect from the museum shop online or in person during normal opening hours. The book can be posted to anywhere in the UK mainland*

The Out of Town Museum (OOT), a National Lottery Heritage funded project, celebrates the rural heritage of Coquetdale and has created a permanent record of a former way of life. Since 2019 we have recorded the memories and stories, told in the local Northumbrian voice, of people living and working in the area through oral history interviews and collected photographs, documents and artefacts for future generations to cherish and enjoy.

We have worked in partnership with schools, artists, musicians and filmmakers from the area to create photographic displays, film and original music to keep the heritage and history alive. Our guided walks in partnership with the Northumberland National Park Rangers have provided the opportunity to ‘Walk in their Shoes’, combining the stunning landscape with the voices and memories of those who lived and worked in Coquetdale.

We hope that you enjoy this journey through Coquetdale using the link below.

For our train enthusiasts our model of Whittingham Station was made by George Mitcheson between 1991 and 1996.
It shows the station as it might have looked around 1922.

Quote from a recent visit from the Northumbria Club: "The provision of games at the museum for the younger generation was appreciated by our 21 month old grandson who also liked the model of Whittingham station. The display of the track layout diagram was also a link to the Northumbria Club as it was donated by Fred Taylor who was one of our members before he passed away".
