Once upon a time.... a child, called Christian, was very poorly in hospital. He had cancer and went through months of difficult chemotherapy. His mother, Sarah, was an author and publisher and, together with a fellow author, Paul, they decided to publish a children's storybook to help raise money for the hospital that saved Christian's life (previously Yorkhill Children's Hospital but now the Royal Hospital for Sick Children). Sarah and Paul printed the books, 'More Adventures of Wee Robert Bruce', and arranged a series of storytelling events for schools and libraries at which they also sold copies of the book. In total they raised over ÂŁ1000 for the first print run of the books, and so began 'The Regal Storytellers'. At first, Paul alone told the stories but as time went on, he was joined by Sarah as they began to make it more of an educational experience for the Children (and their parents).

Christian's treatment was successful and the cancer disappeared from his body, leaving only a scar on the back of his head. He is now a healthy 18-year-old looking forward to a bright future. They, including his sister Eleanor, continue to be very thankful for the care he received and the 5 subsequent years that they watched over him to make sure it didn't return.

We are also grateful to Christian for showing great courage during this time and enabling us to create what has been a wonderful storytelling partnership!

THE DECLARATION OF ARBROATH: April 6th 1320 marked a very significant date in the reign of King Robert the Bruce, so today sees the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath. The Declaration was written in Latin by Bernard de Linton, Abbot of Arbroath, and was sealed by eight earls and around forty barons. Six years after Scotland's victory at the Battle of Bannockburn, Edward II of England still refused to acknowledge Scotland's status as an independent nation, irrespective of the fact that there was no longer an English military presence in Scotland. Robert the Bruce was still seen (internationally) as an excommunicate and an outcast - King in name, but his power as such unrecognised.

It became necessary for Scotland as a nation - the people - to assert their rights, hence the Declaration, which was a letter from the people of Scotland sent directly to the Pope. King Robert could not put his name or his seal to it, as he would not be recognised as King.

However, the wording of the Declaration was profound and very powerful, (the pen being mightier than the sword) and it had the desired effect. The most famous line goes as follows.... "As long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours, that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself". But there are more significant parts to it than this. The people asserted themselves over their king and expected him to protect their rights...."if he should give up what he has begun, and agree to make us or our kingdom, subject to the King of England, we should exert ourselves at once and drive him out as our enemy and subverter of his own rights and ours".

The Declaration was a diplomatic masterpiece and had the desired effect. It took a few more years, but in time, the King's excommunication was lifted and the rights of the Kings of Scots to be fully anointed thereafter was given - on a par with any other kingdom in Christendom.

In time, once restrictions are lifted, there will be an exhibition on the Declaration, but to find out more, please visit the National Records of Scotland https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/declaration -resource
