Sallie, teaching daughters Alice & Georgina, as well as their cousin Peter, during the Summer Holidays, circa 1994.

The "On Tour" idea started in the 1980s, with Sallie travelling to customers indoor and outdoor pools to teach swimming lessons.

More than 40 years later, that legacy remains, as Sallie and Alice offer private swimming tuition for those with their own pools across the local area. If you have access to a pool and would like Summer Holiday Lessons for your family & friends, do get in touch!

We want everyone to enjoy going for a swim, but with more and more people heading to the water and tragic drowning incidents once again highlighting the potential risks, below is some key water safety advice to help keep safe around the water:

Know the Water Safety Code

🛑Stop and think; always swim in a safe place
🏊Swim in supervised, lifeguarded areas
🌊Enter the water slowly and carefully

Stay together 🤝
Stay within reach of others, and keep children in arms reach at all times

Float 🛟
If you fall in or become tired, float on your back, breathe, relax and call for help

🚨If you see someone in an emergency:

📞 Call 999 (If you're at the coast, ask for the Coastguard, if you’re inland ask for Fire and Rescue)
🗣 Tell the person in the water to float on their back, breathe, relax
🟡 Throw them something that floats

Air temp isn’t water temp. Stay safe.

Entering cold water makes you GASP.
Cold water increases your breathing and heart rate, causing PANIC.
Your muscles will get too cold, making you uncoordinated and WEAK.

RLSS UK’s advice is:
• Choose lifeguarded spots
• Never swim alone
• Wear bright colours
• Enter the water slowly
• Get out before you get cold

If you get into trouble, Find Your Float.

It may feel warm outside, but the water isn’t.

Our fabulous new red swimming hat was designed with visibility in the water as a top priority.

Over the years, we’ve had a variety of swim hats at the swim school - back in the 90s, we even had a navy one with the slogan “Swim Don’t Sink!” printed on it!

Some of the earliest photos we can find of the building of the pool at Broom.

Sallie’s father, David Burden, clearing the overgrown garden in 1975 and discovering an ornamental fish pond in its unusual dog-leg shape!

Over the years, so many people have asked why the pool isn’t straight - and the simple answer is, that this was the shape we found it in!
