Elizabethan Madrigal Singers Student Choir at Aberystwyth University đŸŽ¶

MADs is the longest running society at Aberystwyth University. Est. 1950

We sing a wide range of music from Madrigals to modern day! Formed in 1950, the Elizabethan Madrigal Singers (or more fondly known as 'Mads') is the longest running society in Aberystwyth University. This auditioned choir was started by a group of friends who wanted to sing madrigals; however over the past 60 years the repertoire has broadened to cover sacred, secular, folk, jazz, and spiritual pi

eces. The choir soon evolved to become seen as the university's prime chamber choir and now holds a prestigious and extensive history. Each generation of Mads brings something new, but always holds true to the traditions of the choir, primarily the continuation of high standards and dedication. As a chamber choir, we perform all pieces a ca****la and keep the number of singers relatively small (16-25 singers). Due to this, the choir always forms a strong bond, which is particularly strengthened by our annual residential course in Gregynog Hall, Wales. This entails a weekend away in the beautiful Gregynog Hall, rehearsing and singing for approximately 15 hours over the weekend, and taking part in small ensemble workshops. Alongside singing in and around the town of Aberystwyth, Mads go on tour every summer to places such as Sweden, Portugal, Budapest, Iceland, and Prague. This is a great opportunity to share our music with other countries, not to mention a great deal of fun.

Introducing this year’s (and our first official) Welsh Officer, Gruff Robinson!

“Hi everyone, my name is Gruff (he/him) and I am the Mads’ Welsh Officer for this year, in charge of translating some of our content into Welsh and helping the choir to learn the Welsh pieces that we add to our repertoire. I’m a second year Physics student and in my spare time I like to rock-climb and to cook. Singing in a choir was a big part of my experience all throughout primary and secondary school, so being able to sing as a part of a group again in Aber felt like a home away from home and a great way to make new friends, even if you’re not confident singing. I’m looking forward to all the fun we’ll have singing together!”

“Helo bawb, fy enw i yw Gruff, a fi yw Swyddog Gymraeg y MADs am y flwyddyn hon, yn gyfrifol am gyfieithu i’r Gymraeg a helpu’r cĂŽr i ddysgu’r darnau Cymraeg rydyn ni’n eu hychwanegu at ein repertoire. Rwy’n fyfyriwr Ffiseg 2ail blwyddyn ac yn fy amser hamdden rwy’n hoffi dringo creigiau a choginio. Roedd canu mewn cĂŽr yn rhan fawr o fy mhrofiad drwy gydol yr ysgol gynradd a’r ysgol uwchradd, felly roedd gallu canu fel rhan o grĆ”p eto yn Aber yn teimlo fel cartref oddi cartref ac yn ffordd wych o wneud ffrindiau newydd, hyd yn oed os nad ydych chi’n hyderus yn canu. Rwy’n edrych ymlaen at yr holl hwyl y byddwn ni’n cael yn canu gyda’n gilydd!”

Introducing this year’s Wellbeing Officer, Daisy Fisher!

Heya!! My name is Daisy (she/her) and I’m the Mads’ Wellbeing Officer for the 2026-27 year. My singing experience (or lack thereof) consists of my primary school choir and screaming into the karaoke machine when my parents weren’t home. I’m a third year Mathematics student who enjoys a big hike one day and then sleeping in the next, and being part of the Mads has really helped me meet a range of awesome people!
I’ll be focusing on providing for the tea and coffee breaks, taking register, choosing our charity to support for the year and making sure you’re all feeling happy and comfortable in rehearsals. If you’re considering joining, I promise it’ll be worth it!!!

Heia!! Fy enw i yw Daisy (Hi/Ei) a fi yw Swyddog Llesiant y Mads ar gyfer 2026-27. Mae fy mhrofiad canu (neu ddiffyg profiad) yn cynnwys cĂŽr fy ysgol gynradd a sgrechian mewn i beiriant karaoke pan oedd fy rhieni yn gadael y tĆ·. Rwy’n fyfyriwr Mathemateg yn fy 3ydd flwyddyn sy’n mwynhau cerdded un diwrnod ac yna cysgu’n hwyr y diwrnod nesaf, ac mae bod yn rhan o’r Mads wedi fy helpu i gwrdd ag amrywiaeth o bobl anhygoel!
Byddaf yn canolbwyntio ar ddarparu i’r egwyliau te a choffi, cofrestru, dewis ein helusen i gefnogi am y flwyddyn a sicrhau eich bod chi i gyd yn teimlo’n hapus ac yn gyfforddus yn yr ymarferion. Os ydych chi’n meddwl am ymuno, dwi’n addo bod hi’n werth gwneud!!!

Introducing this year’s Social Secretary, Gabrielle Taylor!

“Hi! I’m Gabrielle (she/her), a third-year filmmaking student and this year’s social sec. I’ve loved being part of the choir for the past two years. I joined with little singing experience, having spent the last decade playing the Viola instead. As an international student, the Mads has become an important community for me, and the people have become like my family across the sea. My aim as social sec is to create a space where each member feels truly welcome and valued. I’m so excited to see what next year brings! (Also
Spoons?)“

“Hei! Gabrielle (Hi/Ei) dwi, myfyriwr ffilm yn fy 3ydd flwyddyn ac ysgrifennydd cymdeithasol eleni. Rydw i wedi bod wrth fy modd i fod yn rhan o’r cîr am y ddwy flynedd ddiwethaf. Ymunais heb fawr o brofiad canu, ond Gyda degawd yn chwarae’r fiola yn lle. Fel myfyriwr rhyngwladol, mae’r Mads wedi dod yn gymuned bwysig i mi, ac mae’r bobl wedi dod fel teulu i mi dros y mîr. Fy nod fel ysgrifennydd cymdeithasol yw creu amgylchedd lle mae pob aelod yn teimlo wedi eu croesawi ac yn cael eu gwerthfawrogi. Rydw i mor gyffrous i weld be mae’r flwyddyn nesaf yn ei gynnig. (Hefyd, Spoons?)”

Introducing this year’s treasurer, Sofiia Vyshnievska!

“Hello everyone! My name is Sofiia (she/her), and I am the Treasurer of this year’s committee. I am a third-year student studying Business and Management, and a member of the wonderful Mads choir. Starting from when I was four in Ukraine, I have been a member of six different choirs. Although I am not trained in any instruments or sheet music notation, the Mads have allowed me to train my musical ear and singing ability. The choir is a community of amazing and lovely people, and they have made my time at Uni the best it could be - changing me for the better. I am looking forward to meeting all new members, and to all the adventures and songs we’ll sing together!“

“Helî bawb! Fy enw i yw Sofiia (Hi/Ei), a fi yw Trysorydd y pwyllgor eleni. Rwy'n fyfyriwr 3ydd blwyddyn yn astudio Busnes a Rheolaeth, ac yn aelod o gîr gwych y Mads. O'r adeg pan oeddwn i'n bedair oed yn Wcrain, rwyf wedi bod yn aelod o chwe gîr gwahanol. Er nad wyf wedi cael hyfforddiant mewn unrhyw offerynnau na cherddoriaeth, mae'r Mads wedi caniatáu i mi hyfforddi fy nghlust gerddorol a fy gallu canu. Mae'r cîr yn gymuned o bobl anhygoel a hyfryd, ac maen nhw wedi gwneud fy mlwyddyn gyntaf y gorau y gallai fod - a fy newid er gwell. Rwy'n edrych ymlaen at gwrdd ñ'r holl aelodau newydd, ac at yr holl anturiaethau a chaneuon y byddwn yn eu canu gyda'n gilydd!”

Introducing this year’s Secretary, Ula Archer!

“Hi Everyone,
My name’s Ula (she/her). I have been in this choir for 1 year and don’t really have any past singing training. I am so looking forward to working together with the rest of committee next year to make choir as smooth, enjoyable and welcoming as it can be next year. I have enjoyed the Mads thoroughly this year and have felt so welcomed, and I hope all our new and returning members have an equally fantastic experience.”

“Helo Bawb,
Fy enw i yw Ula. Dwi di bod yn canu yn y cîr ers blwyddyn heb unrhyw brofiad canu o’r blaen. Rydw i wir yn edrych ymlaen at gydweithio gyda gweddill y pwyllgor blwyddyn nesaf i greu y cîr mwyaf llyfn, pleserus a chroesawgar a phosib blwyddyn nesaf. Rydw i wedi mwynhau’r Mads yn fawr iawn eleni a gobeithio y bydd ein holl aelodau newydd a’r rhai sy’n dychwelyd yn cael profiad yr un mor wych.”

đŸŽ¶Meet the 2026-2027 committeeđŸŽ¶
Introducing this year’s Assistant Conductor, Chloe Shaw!

“Hi, I’m Chloe (she/her), and next year I’ll be the Mads’ Assistant Conductor alongside pursuing a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences! I’ve been singing in choirs since I was four years old, and since then I’ve been involved in various musical groups, from pop and chamber choirs to soul and jazz bands. Although I’d sung in choirs before joining the Mads, being part of the society has been such an enjoyable experience as someone from a non-classical background. It has challenged me in all the right ways, and I feel that both my singing and sight-reading abilities have improved substantially since becoming a member. Being in the Mads has been one of the highlights of my university experience, and is a huge reason why I decided to stay on for an extra year after graduating with a BSc in Biochemistry. I’m really looking forward to helping maintain the choir’s high standards as part of the committee and contributing to everything that makes the Mads such a rewarding society to be part of.“

“Helo, Chloe (Hi/Ei) ydw i, a blwyddyn nesaf fi fydd Arweinydd Cynorthwyol Y Mads wrth wneud gradd Meistr mewn Gwyddorau Biolegol! Dwi di bod yn canu mewn corau ers oeddwn i’n bedair oed, ac ers hynny wedi bod yn rhan o sawl grĆ”p cerddorol, o gorau pop a siambr i fandiau soul a jazz. Er fy mod i wedi canu cyn ymuno a’r Mads, mae bod yn rhan o’r gymdeithas wedi bod yn brofiad mor bleserus fel rhywun o gefndir anghlasurol. Mae wedi bod yn heriol, ond rwy’n teimlo bod fy ngalluoedd canu a darllen cerddoriaeth wedi gwella’n sylweddol ers dod yn aelod. Mae bod yn Y Mads wedi bod yn un o uchafbwyntiau fy mhrofiad prifysgol, ac mae’n rheswm mawr pam wnes i benderfynu aros am flwyddyn ychwanegol ar ĂŽl graddio gyda BSc Biocemeg. Rydw i wir yn edrych ymlaen at helpu cynnal safonau uchel y cĂŽr fel rhan o’r pwyllgor a chyfrannu at bopeth sy’n gwneud Y Mads yn gymdeithas mor foddhaol i fod yn rhan ohono.”

đŸŽ¶Meet the 2026-2027 committeeđŸŽ¶
Introducing this year’s conductor, Max Rycroft!

Hi, my name is Max (he/him), I am a third year marketing student and a lifelong fan of singing in choirs. As conductor I am looking forward to an exciting year of singing for everyone in the Mads, new and old! Outside of the Mads I also play rugby for the University. If you don’t find me listening to choral music, you will probably find me drinking! Bring on the new academic year.

Helo, Max (Ef/Ei) ydw i, myfyriwr Marchnata yn fy 3ydd flwyddyn, ac yn hoff iawn o ganu mewn corau drwy gydol fy oes. Fel arweinydd, rwy’n edrych ymlaen at flwyddyn gyffrous o ganu i bawb yn y Mads, hen a newydd! Y tu allan i’r Mads, dwi hefyd yn chwarae rygbi i’r Brifysgol. Os nad ydych chi’n fy ngweld yn gwrando ar gerddoriaeth gorawl, mae’n debygol byddwch chi’n gweld fi’n yfed! Dewch ñ’r flwyddyn academaidd newydd ‘mlaen!

đŸŽ¶Meet the 2026-2027 committe!đŸŽ¶
This year’s President, Percy Hill!

“Hello! I’m Percy, a Business and Climate Change student and I’ve loved singing with the MADs for the past two years. I’ve sung in choirs for around a decade, and have been grateful to sing in such wonderful buildings like St Paul’s in London to the York Minster and St Mary’s in Edinburgh; I LOVE a beautiful acoustic. I’m a big reader, occasional cyclist, and eternally found in the library definitely locked in! The MADs are such a fun community, and I can’t wait to take this choir into the next year!”

“Helo! Percy ydw i, myfyriwr Busnes a Newid Hinsawdd a rydw i wedi bod wrth fy modd yn canu gyda’r MADs ers y ddwy flynedd ddiwethaf. Rydw i wedi canu bod yn mewn corau ers tua degawd, ac wedi bod yn ddiolchgar o ganu mewn adeiladau mor wych fel Eglwys Sant Paul yn Llundain i Eglwys Gadeiriol Efrog a Eglwys Sant Fair yng Nghaeredin; dwi mewn CARIAD ag acwstig hardd. Rydw i’n hoff o darllen, yn feiciwr achlysurol, ac yn treulio gweddil fy mywyd yn y llyfgell, gweithio’n galed! Mae’r MADs yn gymuned mor hwyl, ac alla i ddim aros i arwain y cîr hwn i’r flwyddyn nesaf!”
