Sending many thanks to Kate and Rosie at the Scottish Ornithological Club at Aberlady yesterday for a wonderful introduction to their bird archives. It was such a privilege to see so many historical records and some of Donald Watson’s meticulous drawings and notes. I’m feeling very inspired to make some work based on what nature collection might be in our current age when both the number of species and the number of each species are decreasing.

Thank you also to Visual Arts Scotland for arranging this wonderful opportunity. I hope I can make something worthy of exhibition next year!

Green plover, lapwing, peewit - what would you call a bird with such shimmering colours and fabulous flight?

I’m going wild.

Well, learning about rewilding to be precise. I passed the excellent course on the Open University’s Open Learn site, which is a great introduction. Every time I go out I’m now thinking about how our infrastructure makes it difficult for wildlife to thrive. I think the first thing that needs rewilding is our mindset, and I have some ideas in mind for new artworks along these lines. In the meantime, some more reading for research!

Are you seeing the first signs of Autumn? 🍂 I love September. The excessive heat of summer has gone and the weather is still good but there’s a nice crispness to the air. You’re looking forward to mulled wine and apple pies after walks in the woods, then snuggling down in your favourite armchair with a blanket and a good book.

These changing colours are like an artist’s sweetie jar - so much temptation to draw and paint everything! What are you noticing where you are?

On the drawing board now. This friendly fox lived in the back garden of a house we rented a few years ago. They would regularly keep us company if we sat outside.

I’m finishing off some works in progress while I research a mixture of myths, ecology and folklore for a new series of oil paintings. One of the perils of a creative life is that there aren’t enough hours in the day to bring all your ideas into fruition as quickly as you’d like.

What a fabulous workshop yesterday by the wonderful with by - exploring the expressiveness of Turner’s watercolours. Inspiring talk, lots of ideas and an amazing amount of active creativity, especially from the folks who’d never even tried watercolour before. I was just there to help out, not take part, but I still learned a lot and am thinking about Rachel’s words on how great artists work differently, by putting more of themselves into their work. I’m not sure I’ll ever be considered a “great artist” but I’m working now to make my work more authentic to me. Creating work from my heart seems to be a good thing to aim for.

If you’re interested in workshops like this, please follow Connecting Threads, Rachel, and Norham Arts as they all regularly hold events. Lovely people to work with, I can’t recommend them enough!

Having a book mountain must mean it’s time to start my research for another project. Lots of fascinating information in this pile - do you have any other recommendations?
