Back in November last year, I was sat outside waiting to be interviewed for a forthcoming film about Mod culture being made by a German director . I spotted a man who I thought would be a perfect fit for 50 Plus… but until yesterday I had no idea who he was. He is one of the anonymous portraits. Last night this came up on Turns out he’s , her friend and personal hairdresser, and the hairdresser Vanessa Redgrave used to take on tour with her. So now I know, and he knows he’s in the book!

I’ve been off work with problems from an ongoing back injury for the last couple of weeks so climbing the walls a bit. I’ve managed to do a bit of sewing, and finished this chore coat. Today I got my Mamiya 645 out and shot some film out to try and at least do a bit of photography. Here’s a self portrait with two of my recent creations. Beautiful scarves generously provided by for an article last year in

In October 1966, when pregnant and carrying me, my mother who had done her nursing training in Cardiff and the Valleys in the early part of that decade, was driven to Tredegar from Surrey by my father, a journalist, to visit one of her old colleagues. Whilst they were there, the Aberfan disaster happened, killing 144 people, 116 of them being children in the primary school. The cousin of my mother’s friend was a teacher in the school, and one of those killed. My father was one of the first non local journalists on the scene. In 2019, on a dark and drizzly day, I took them to the cemetery for the first time. An incredibly moving experience. Aberfan, October 21st 1966. A tragedy that could have been avoided if those in power had listened to local people, instead of treating them as a disposable commodity, putting profit before lives.

Immature I know, but every time I pass this sign, I want to jump out with a big black permanent marker pen and write a big NO in front of it…

Back to Iceland for today’s travel pics. The derelict vehicles were on a mountainside and I photographed them at around 2am. Climbing on to the remains of the flatbed of the Volvo lorry to get another shot, the rotting timbers gave way, and I crashed through, narrowly avoiding bad injury on the rusting metal. I dodged a bullet as injured alone on a mountain, in the middle of nowhere, wouldn’t have been too clever. Still, I got the shot. And that’s what matters!

There’s a lot of rubbish in the media about Antifa at the moment, largely stirred by Trump, and adopted by Farage and Yaxley-Lennon’s goons over here. This is my grandfather, Sgt. Major Harry White, Queens’ Regt. Antifa. Second Row, fourth from left, and also the Dunquerque Medal awarded for fighting Fascism. This is what Antifa looked like then. All that’s changed is the uniform, and that now membership doesn’t involve conscription. These days not being Antifa is personal choice…

I’ve just walked into town to get some gentle exercise and a loaf of bread. Normally on a Tuesday a South East Asian couple busk evangelical songs and hymns, usually devoid of tune but ultimately harmless. Today was different. It felt aggressive. A large flag which at a distance looked like a cross of St. George, a very loud PA, several younger white men pushing leaflets at people. When I politely said no thank you, I was met with a snorted laugh of derision by a big, bearded, gap toothed Scouser, who when I asked why he had laughed, replied “I didn’t laugh at you. You must be fookin’ trippin’ “. Maybe it’s the Naproxen? This in no way felt like people trying to spread a message of love. It felt toxic and predatory. I have no idea why this should be allowed in a public space, by any religion .
On the bright side though, I did then bump into these two. There’s more Christian value in those walking frames than anything on display further back down the road.
