The 1597 Act of the Parliament of Scotland mandated that "prisoun houses suld be bigged within all burrowes". Before this Act, prisons in the modern sense did not exist in Scotland, and this statute shifted the burden of law enforcement and detention directly onto the local town councils - including Aberdeen.
Phil Astley, Team Leader – , will look at crime and punishment in Aberdeen in the 16th century, with reference to the Tolbooth and the 1597 Act’s requirement that all burghs build ‘sufficient and sure prisons, jails and war-houses’.
