Hilarious, curious and deeply human, Transmission is a darkly comedic and tender-hearted performance by playwright and drag artist Nelly Kelly, exploring Scotland’s shift from world-leading on LGBT+ rights, to being fertile ground for the anti-trans movement.

Blending DIY cabaret with political theatre, male impersonation and a heap of mischief, Transmission examines how public perception of trans people is shaped—not by trans voices—but by ‘single issue’ campaigners, political-footballing and media distortion.

Transmission was an UK Open Award 2024 commission made possible thanks to funding from .

Exciting things ahead!

Meet the makers behind Creative Scotland's latest funded projects! 🎉 With £1,064,295 in funding from The National Lottery and The Scottish Government shared across 46 projects, this round of the Open Fund is full of bold ideas and brilliant creative voices:

🎮 Developer James Muirhead is combining gaming and Gaelic language through Grease Trap '99, a two-hour horror experience set in a seaside village, voiced entirely in Scottish Gaelic, with a full commercial release planned for this summer.

💃 Female Funk Fruition is returning with monthly workshops exploring the roots of funk and hip-hop, led by veterans Nadia "Funk Forever" Sewnauth and Shelltoe Mel. The programme also includes a pop-up exhibition drawing on Mel's personal archive of film, fashion, books and photographs to tell the story of hip-hop dance from a female perspective.

🎙️ Sanctuary Q***r Arts is shining a light on the remarkable story of q***r Victorian activist George Cecil Ives through The Order of Chaeronea: A Secret Q***r Audio Musical, an eight-episode audio drama with an original 16-song soundtrack.

Find out about all 46 projects on our website - link in comments🔗

Oooooh, it’s such a pleasure and a privilege to be supporting two brilliant scottish trans lead-artists this week!

Multidisciplinary Artist Bobbie is spending the week collaborating with choreographer/performer and a company of incredible movement artists, experimenting with new ways bodies can move and interact to reveal an inner world - with Bobbie’s original music at its core.

Meanwhile, playwright and performer is reconnecting with Sanctaury to explore next steps for their new satirical live art piece - The Transmission - which playfully positions Nelly as the leader of a ‘trans cult’ (…where do we sign up?!) and was supported in a research and development phase by .

Now more than ever, we’re hugely motivated to support, uplift and champion these brilliant artists and their vital perspectives, which empower, enrich and celebrate trans lives. Get behind them!

Unfold by Bobbie is supported by .

The Transmission was recently supported by the UK Open Award 2024/5 (which is currently open for submissions - check out Nelly’s most recent post).
