The Jealous Friend Who Stole Her Best Friend’s Baby
(Short Story)
In a peaceful village outside Lagos, Nigeria, lived two inseparable best friends: Amara and Kemi. Everyone admired their friendship. They grew up together, attended the same schools, and promised that nothing would ever separate them.
But life took different paths.
Amara married a hardworking businessman named David, and after years of trying, she finally became pregnant. The whole community celebrated because everyone knew how much she had prayed for a child.
Kemi smiled in public, but inside, jealousy burned like fire.
She was still unmarried, struggling financially, and secretly wished she had the happy family Amara had.
When baby Hope was born, Amara trusted Kemi completely. She allowed her to babysit, feed the baby, and even stay in their home whenever she wanted.
One afternoon, while Amara was resting after a long night with the baby, Kemi quietly carried little Hope outside.
“I’ll just take her for some fresh air,” she whispered.
But she never came back.
Hours turned into panic.
The family searched everywhere. The police, neighbors, churches, and markets joined the search, but there was no sign of Kemi or the baby.
Months passed.
Amara cried every day, refusing to give up hope.
Meanwhile, Kemi had traveled to another state, pretending Hope was her own daughter. She forged documents and built a new life, believing no one would ever discover the truth.
Seven years later…
Hope had grown into a bright little girl. One day at school, her teacher asked every child to bring their birth certificate for a school competition.
The fake documents Kemi had created raised questions.
Authorities began investigating.
A DNA test was ordered.
The shocking truth came out.
Hope was not Kemi’s daughter.
She was Amara’s missing child.
Police arrested Kemi immediately.
In court, she finally confessed through tears.
“I was jealous… I wanted the life she had. I convinced myself that if I couldn’t have my own happiness, I would take hers.”
The courtroom fell silent.
Amara hugged her daughter tightly after seven painful years apart. Mother and daughter cried in each other’s arms as the entire courtroom watched with tears.
Kemi was sentenced to prison for kidnapping, document forgery, and child trafficking-related offenses.
As she was led away in handcuffs, she looked back one last time.
She had stolen a child…
But in the end, she lost her freedom.

Jealousy can destroy lives. Celebrate the success and blessings of others, because what is meant for you will never require you to steal from someone else.
