Watercolor finished! Introducing Captain Yoyogi!🐷🎨

Located in the retro-style food alley called Hobo Shinjuku Noren‑gai in Sendagaya, just a 3-minute walk from Yoyogi Station.

I was painting over several days as I had time. It was hot, then cold, then rainy... so after the heavy initial yellow wash the paper buckled like crazy. I tried this trick I found online, you spray the back of your watercolor paper with water, place it face down on a flat surface, then put something flat on top, and add a bunch of weight (books, small dumbbells). You make a painting sandwich and you squish it. The next day the paper was perfectly ironed flat. Kinda cool.

Here’s my sunny version of the Cathedral of Our Lady (Antwerp), based on a reference photo from a sketch-along with and . (Thanks, guys!)

It’s sunny here in Montreal today, so I figured Antwerp deserved some sunshine too. 😎☀️

This was a super loose paint job — lots of wet-on-wet and wild colors. The photo was in black and white so I added a little creative license🎨

Here is a quick watercolor of a Japanese gyoza restaurant with a cool cinderblock facade.

Now back to Father’s Day! So far my wife says I am mowing the lawn, washing the car, and barbecuing… wait a minute, this sounds like any other day. Not fair.😅

☕️🇯🇵🌸 Kyoto Coffee Shop (kissaten) called Kissa Soirée. My sketch was a bit rough, but I painted it anyway. I may try sketching again. The storefront had some cool architectural elements that I wasn’t able to fit in this first draft (ran out of space).

It’s been raining for days here in Montreal and it’s taking forever for this watercolor to dry!☔️

🎨 Finished watercolor of Tokyo’s Café Musica (カフェ·ムジカ) — apparently the second-generation owner’s been brewing coffee since graduating high school, and now his son, the third generation, is in training. Sugoi! ☕️

I’ve been trying out the Paul Rubens Neon Watercolour set — used a bit of their Opera Orange to punch up the store sign and the traffic safety mirror. I also gave the whole coffeeshop a light yellow wash (like I’ve been doing recently). Gives the place a golden hour vibe and ties the colors together.

I pieced this together from a mix of reference photos and streetview angles, adding whatever details felt right. The traffic lights and fences weren’t in the original ref, but I like pulling in those foreground bits that are always just a little out of frame.

🤖🌴🍹 Will my little tiki bar find a forever home?

To make a long story short, I asked at Giant Robot how artists get invited to exhibit their work. So they invited me.😂🎉

This is a themed exhibition centered on plants and flowers—not exactly my forté. But I painted a plant-covered Tokyo Tiki Bar, and I sent it off to West LA.

For the many followers who’ve asked to buy my work over the years—and I always say no—this one painting, this one time—yes, it’s for sale!

My first exhibition! Thanks ! You will always be my first.😎

Plants & Flowers 2025: A Green-life Themed Art Exhibition at
April 19 to 27th, 2025
Artwork will be available online April 19th at 11 AM PT (2:00 PM ET in Montreal🇨🇦)
