Luiz Martins' work is characterized by his artistic language that marries painting and sculpture. His pieces are not merely visual objects but are imbued with a deep narrative that speaks to issues of territoriality, space, and cultural conquest.

This exploration of spatial dimensions is evident in his large chromatic fields, where vibrant colors are prioritized to evoke an autumnal density. These paintings are territories in themselves, showcasing a formal visual and physical hybridism.

In his drawings, Martins fuses aesthetic graphics with masses of color, exploring the boundaries of the line as expansive fields of visual expression. This interplay between form and color is a testament to his commitment to pushing the limits of visual arts.

Throughout his career, Martins has maintained a strong connection to his roots. His works are a homage to the history and struggles of his people in Machacalis, transforming their story into the cornerstone of his artistic research. He continuously delves into the themes of identity, resilience, and cultural preservation, creating art that resonates with both personal and collective narratives.

Entre Mar by Luiz Martins is on view at our Paris/Saint-Ouen space until January 27, 2025, also on view on our Artsy space online during Holidays.

ALAIR GOMES: LOVE ABOVE ALL THINGS

Why is the body of photographs by artist Alair Gomes (1921-1992) relevant to our art and our history?

Alair Gomes not only registered a captivating and challenging set of photographs of ordinary males in different actions and forms in the city but connected imaginary with reality, historically challenging the status quo and religion regarding homosexuality.

Gomes’ work is a profound political statement. By using his camera and hidden vantage points, he captured the male form in a way that was both intimate and defiant. His clandestine approach was a direct response to the oppressive societal norms of his time, where homosexuality was not only taboo but actively persecuted.

In a society where the mere acknowledgment of homosexual desire could lead to severe repercussions, Gomes’ photographs served as a silent rebellion. They documented a reality that was often denied and suppressed. His images are not just artistic expressions; they are historical records of resistance against a culture that sought to erase and invalidate the existence of homosexual individuals.

The hidden nature of his work underscores the dangers faced by those who dared to defy societal expectations. Gomes’ photographs are a testament to the courage required to live authentically in a world that demanded conformity. They invite viewers to reflect on the progress made and the struggles that continue in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights.

By bringing these hidden desires into the light, Gomes challenged the dominant narratives of his time and paved the way for future generations to explore and express their identities more freely. His work remains a powerful reminder of the importance of visibility and the ongoing battle for acceptance and equality.

In essence, Alair Gomes’ photographs are not just about the subjects he captured; they are about the broader struggle for human rights and the enduring quest for personal and collective liberation. His legacy is a crucial part of our artistic and historical landscape, reminding us of the power of art to challenge, provoke, and inspire change.

CAN YOU SHARE WHAT INITIALLY INSPIRED YOU TO USE THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION AS THE CENTRAL THEME IN YOUR ARTWORK?
I am very curious about humans and society, particularly our existence. Since childhood, I have often felt a sense of depression and confusion when contemplating questions such as why we are here, what is our purpose, and why we were born.
The theory of evolution, which states that we originated from apes, has brought me one step closer to understanding the unknown aspects of our lives. I have been exploring stories about ourselves and our relationships for a long time, and this subject has naturally evolved for me.

WHAT DOES “IOMTEIOT” SYMBOLIZE FOR YOU, AND HOW DOES THIS CHARACTER REFLECT ON THE MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND COMPLEXITIES OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS?
The reason why I named it “iomteiot” (you and me) is to tell a story about us. It is not a story only about where we came from and where we are going, which has no answer.
I have seen and observed countless instances where we do not understand each other. From fighting with neighbors next door to wars between nations, complaints about the older generation, and frustration with the new generation, I believe that understanding others is the main solution. “iomteiot” is a symbol of this comprehension
I have brought the first human, who we do not know and who is the most difficult to understand, to the modern era. An era that he hasn’t experienced and is trying to “understand” our society through different experiences. For me, this is the best example that expresses my point of view about relationships and understanding.

ECHOES

The exhibition echoes the past and thus fulfills a duty of remembrance. Between historical narrative and artistic discovery, it introduces the work of an artist who, for over 25 years, has united her passion with her poetic reflections.

During the Second World War (1939-1945), Finland endured three separate wars. The Winter War took place between Finland and the Soviet Union from November 30, 1939, to March 13, 1940. After that, a truce followed, lasting just over a year. The truce ended on June 25, 1941, when the Continuation War began. The Continuation War occurred between Finland and the Soviet Union from June 25, 1941, to September 1944. The Moscow Armistice was signed on September 19, 1944, but its peace terms resulted in the outbreak of the third war: the Lapland War, which occurred between Finland and Germany from October 1, 1944, to April 25, 1945. The armistice was signed on February 10, 1947, in Paris.

This exhibition not only serves as a tribute to the historical events that shaped Finland’s past but also acts as a bridge to the present, connecting viewers with the emotional and cultural legacy of the era. Through the lens of Kati Riikonen’s art, we are invited to reflect on the experiences of those who lived through these tumultuous times, and to understand the impact of war on personal and national identities.

Art, in this context, becomes a powerful medium for preserving history and fostering understanding. It allows us to engage with the past in a deeply personal and emotional way, making the experiences of previous generations more relatable and tangible. By translating historical events into visual narratives, artists like Riikonen help ensure that the memories and lessons of the past are not forgotten. They challenge us to consider how these historical moments continue to shape our present and influence our future.

As we ponder these works, we are left with a profound question: How can contemporary art continue to reveal new insights and stories from our collective history, ensuring that future generations remain connected to their heritage?

SERIES OF INTERVIEWS WITH LUIZ MARTINS (3/3)

Entre Mar by Luiz Martins will be on view at our Paris/Saint-Ouen space until January 27, 2025.

HOW DO YOU DEVELOP AN IDEA FROM AN ABSTRACT CONCEPT TO ITS MATERIALIZATION AS A WORK OF ART?
First, there’s no such thing as a purely abstract idea. Every concept comes from something real, tangible, or imagined—it always has substance. My work follows a clear line of thought and extensive research, and every new project, even those entirely original, has been explored, studied, and refined over at least 20 years. I am driven by a constant need to understand and to learn, approaching each work as a message that offers new perspectives and ways of thinking about reality or human history. I’m still in a continual process of learning, and each day brings new insights I need to discover.

IN “ENTRE MAR, “ WHAT EMOTIONS OR REFLECTIONS DO YOU HOPE TO EVOKE IN THE AUDIENCE WHEN CONFRONTING THEM WITH THE POLITICAL REALITIES THE WORKS SYMBOLIZE?
When a work is released into the world, I believe it carries a message—positive or not—depending on the openness of the viewer. My expectation is that anyone who encounters my work will be touched by it on some level. But this isn’t something I can control. It depends on how willing the person is to engage with new ideas. In today’s polarized world, I find it challenging to break through the ideological barriers that society has put in place.

ALAIR GOMES

LEGACY AND ACTIVISM

Gomes's inheritance extends beyond his photography; he was a part of a broader movement advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights and visibility. His work became an inspiration for future generations of artists, and he is often remembered for his contributions to both art and social change.

After his death in 1992, during a period when AIDS was still claiming many lives, the recognition of Gomes's work grew, his photographs were celebrated for their artistic merit and their role in documenting the complexities of gay life in Brazil during a tumultuous time.

Alair Gomes navigated a challenging landscape shaped by repression, stigma, and loss. His ho******ic images not only captured the beauty of male intimacy but also served as a testament to the resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community in Brazil, contributing to an endowment of activism and artistic expression that continues to inspire minorities.

Today, Gomes's work is recognized not only for its artistic merit but also for its role in documenting and responding to a critical period in LGBTQIA+ History in Brazil.
His photographs continue to inspire discussions around sexuality, identity, and the enduring struggle for acceptance and recognition.

OUT NOW!

CAFÉ ET CI******ES

We are happy to share our new exhibition, Café et Ci******es, by Taeyang Hong, displayed on our online Artsy space!

The first online solo exhibition by artist Taeyang Hong in our gallery entitled Café et ci******es (in English Coffee and ci******es) is a showcase of a selection of medium size artworks that funnily illustrate his research and propose eight artworks in a diversity of themes related to his oneiric and critical research. Artworks like “Café et ci******es”, “Pool” and “Trottinette” illustrate his experience living abroad and observing different cultures and behaviors, always adding his personage “iomteiot” as part of this adventure. Paintings like “Tell Guillaume.. (I said the apple)” and “I Don’t See Any Problem” are a critical statement to local stories, that allow communities and populations to live in their imaginary world and to develop a system based on mythology and storytelling.

Café et Ci******es by Taeyang Hong is not just an exhibition; it is an invitation to explore the intricate dance between science and mythology, reality and imagination. Through his playful yet profound artworks, Hong encourages us to challenge our perceptions and engage in critical thinking.

Art, in its essence, serves as a powerful medium for reflection and discourse, enabling us to question and understand the complexities of our world. By immersing ourselves in Hong’s unique visual narratives, we are reminded of the importance of empathy and the need to bridge misunderstandings in our society, embracing the transformative power of art in fostering deeper connections and expanding our collective consciousness.
