Nigerian comedian Alibaba, whose real name is Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome ( Born: 24 June 1965), is widely recognized as the "Godfather" of modern Nigerian stand-up comedy. Born in Delta State, he pioneered comedy as a highly lucrative and respected profession in Nigeria, transforming it from a niche art form into a multi-billion naira industry.
In the early 1990s, he successfully changed the public perception of comedians from local jesters to respected professionals. He hit his stride by performing at corporate events and later working with Opa Williams on the highly successful Night of a Thousand Laughs show.
He is a known mentor to a generation of top-tier Nigerian comedians, including Basketmouth, AY, and Julius Agwu.
He has received numerous awards for his cultural impact. In 2024, he was conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Ovie of Agbarha-Otor Kingdom.
He is also recognized as the first Nigerian comedian to ring the closing bell at the Nigerian Exchange Group.
