Amy Thomason Studios

Amy Thomason Studios Fearless art in paint, clay & mixed media. Wanderlust, ocean air, muddy hands. Rooted in nature. Led by instinct. Made with heart. ❤️

I think as long as I have been breathing, I have been creating. I have worked in just about every medium there is, and always come back to clay. My love of clay began about 25 years ago in High school, and the love was reborn while we were living in the Caribbean about 10 years ago. We have lived in some amazing places all over the world just steps from the ocean. Each life experience and new addr

ess gave me a source of great inspiration in my studio and this inspiration is seen in much of my work. Thanks for stopping by and visiting me on Facebook! -Amy

Day 1 of coming home to my creative voice. After decades of starting, stopping, doubting, and circling back, I’m finally choosing to fully commit to myself as an artist. This journey will be messy - beautifully, imperfectly messy and that’s exactly where growth lives.

It’s time to step out of my head and into my creative, messy self. Thank you for being here and walking this journey with me. I’ll be sharing progress along the way the good, the bad, and the beautifully ugly. Pic of one of my best selling mugs from 2020.

Let’s do this. ❤️

Today’s inspiration is one of my practice pieces, French Poppies, from a few years back, hanging in my dear friend and artist Leigh’s home right in the middle of some truly amazing art.

True story (and one of my favorite chapters of my life). 💛

I went back to college at 40 and majored in art, because when your heart won’t stop tugging, you listen. For one of my final projects in drawing class, I created a children’s book called “The adventures of Gracie Lou”, inspired by a Navy child who moved every few years and learned how to be brave in new places.

Here’s the sweet part: my daughter, Caroline Grace, was the main character. We used to call her “Gracie Lou.” And for those who’ve seen Miss Congeniality yes, that’s the same Gracie Lou Sandra Bullock used as her beauty pageant name. 💫 It felt playful, familiar, and perfect for the story we were telling.

Plot twist: I also used the same project for my English final paper (because work smarter, not harder 😄). And the best part? I brought my then pre-teen to school with me to help present it. Standing there together she read the story, I watching it come to life was pure magic.

I loved every minute of writing and illustrating that book. And ever since, I’ve carried this quiet dream of one day turning Gracie Lou into a series for military kids stories that say you’re not alone, your feelings matter, and home can live inside you, and wherever you land.

Some ideas never leave you. They just wait patiently for the right season. 🎨✨

Some of my work while in France. Some finished, some work in progress plus a TON of sketch work and reference photos to work from.

I am more than pleased I came home with more than one painting I am happy with and didn’t throw away. My expectation was to rekindle my creativity, get comfortable with watercolors and that if I painted one dot on one paper I’d be happy. 😊

More importantly I was able to spark my creativity and find my creative voice that was buried too deep inside of me for way too long. The experience with 20 amazing artists I had was nothing short of perfection. Some of the most creative, talented and inspirational people in one place for 10 days was such a blessing that I am truly grateful for.

A huge thank you to Workshops in France for the amazing opportunity and the new friends that have become family I met along the way!
