Nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Ben Richer. Born in Charente, France, in 1987, and now based in Rochechouart, he is deeply committed to craftsmanship. As he often says, he sees himself more as a craftsman than as an artist or designer.
Ben gathers and selects his wood through encounters, donations, and chance discoveries. He places great importance on the creative process itself. Ideas often emerge through a dialogue between the place where the wood was found, the people who donated it, the singularity of its natural forms, and his own imagination. As you observe his sculptures, you may sense an atmosphere imbued with a touch of the fantastical.
Whether working with a tree stump, a branch, or a section of trunk, the essence of his practice lies in the authenticity with which he shapes the material. Ben carves exclusively with hand tools, allowing time to create the space necessary for the emergence of a precise gesture, a strong intention, and the unique presence that inhabits each of his works. His work invites contemplation. Take the time to explore it in every detail: each piece bears the trace of a patient journey, a deliberate intention, and an intimate relationship between the material and the maker.
Ben Richer:
“I love wood above all because nature offers an infinite variety of shapes, species, colors, and grain patterns. But I also love it because its uniqueness gives my sculptures depth and soul. I always feel humbled by what is offered to me and by what I am fortunate enough to recover.”
