In 1960, Japanese artist Susumu Shingu was awarded a government scholarship to live in Italy, where he spent much of his twenties in Rome. It was during this period—when he was brimming with energy and fresh ideas—that his artistic expression evolved from the two-dimensional forms of painting to the three-dimensional forms of kinetic art.
It is impossible to fully understand this artist—whose creativity remains inexhaustible and whose vitality undiminished as he approaches his 89th birthday—without knowing about his formative years.
"IL COSMO" is the first major exhibition dedicated to Susumu Shingu in Italy, a Japanese artist renowned for his kinetic sculptures powered by the natural forces of wind and water.
“I am very happy and honored to present, for the first time in Italy, nine key sculptures from my artistic journey, alongside a group of twenty-one wind sculptures from The Wind Caravan project. Since the early 2000s, this project has traveled around the world, from the rice fields of Japan to the far reaches of New Zealand, crossing the frozen lakes of Finland and the steppes of Mongolia. These wind-born sculptures have brought together peoples and cultures from the most distant lands, where humanity still lives in harmony with the forces of nature. Today, they are exhibited in this cathedral-like space, which, through the exhibition Il Cosmo, brings together a lifetime of work and my deep and enduring connection with Italy, in a year that marks both the 160th anniversary of relations between Italy and Japan and the 45th anniversary of the sister-city partnership between Osaka and Milan.”
