At the end of the rainbow (and the final day of the flag installation 2025-26 Kunsthal Aarhus🌈) - an homage to Ay-O’s numerous ā€˜rainbow happenings’ that he staged throughout his long career, among others in Paris in 1987 when a 300m long rainbow flag was extended from the top of the Eiffel Tower. It’s the final day to enjoy our less nerve wrecking - yet colourful - flag ā€˜happening’ in the sculpture park Kunsthal Aarhus.

Along with other artists of his generation, including Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929) and Yoko Ono (b. 1933), Ay-O is redefining what it means to be old, yet still active and relevant in Japan’s super-aged society, which today has more than 95.000 centenarians.Ā

The limited edition Rainbow Vulcano t-shirts based on Ay-O’s work from 1974 and printed by Ice Screen Printing are for sale via !

šŸ”©ā€Projet Mauriceā€ underway šŸ”©

Architect, designer, artist, inventor, car collector - not to mention comedian/ entertainer (especially during lunch). That is the one and only .
Born in 1935, Maurice stands as one of the last powerhouse creatives of his generation, still working from his studio in the 14th arrondissement - where he met people like Man Ray, LĆ©onard Foujita, Paco Rabanne and Jean Paul Belmondo back in the days (one of his cars was even featured in ƀ bout de Souffle, the final scene filmed in his street - but that’s just a minor ā€˜detail’). Maurice’s life-long professional oeuvre, collaborations and friendships encapsulate an almost extinct world in need of preservation. More to come !

ā€œI am trying to express the sufferings of society, of man, of mankind, of all living beings. I am not too certain of my results: perhaps in the end I have produced mere ā€˜prints’. - Kinosh*ta Tomio, 1962

Originally an oil painter, Kinosh*ta Tomio was self-taught in printmaking, which he started in 1955, inspired by the work of the influential soĢ„saku hanga artist Hiratsuka Un’ichi. Having learned seal carving from his wife, carving became Kinosh*ta’s favourite part of the process of creating a print. Kinosh*ta’s technique and approach as a craftsman became his trademark, as observed by Gaston Petit and Amadio Arboleda in their book Evolving Techniques in Japanese Woodblock Prints (1977): ā€˜Kinosh*ta Tomio creates a terrific impact in his works using a U-shaped gouge to produce lines in parallel.’ Seemingly leaning away from the Japanese tradition, Kinosh*ta’s carving style was closer to that of European Old Masters like Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472–1553) and Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) in the ā€˜methods of varying the width of lines in order to create depth and dimension’. Text from Modern Japanese Printmakers: New Waves and Eruptions

• EXTENDED • Ay-O: Rainbow Landscape 2025-26 will continue until 12 June šŸŽŒ A collaboration between and with courtesy of the artist. We also have something exciting brewing for a final eruption in honour of Ay-O’s 95th birthday - stay tuned šŸŒ‹

Ay-O (b. 1931), who became part of the experimental Fluxus Movement in the 1960s, gained international acclaim and became known as the ā€˜Rainbow Artist’ when he represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 1966 and again at the Osaka Expo in 1970.
Since January 2025 - same year as Osaka played host to a world exposition .2025 once again - Ay-O’s rainbow flags have been bidding visitors welcome as part of the ongoing exhibition project ā€œA Flag is a Piece of Fabricā€. This is the final chance to experience the psychedelic rainbow eruptions all the way from Japan !
