Heather Bause Rubinstein
Provocation

Until 25.10.2026

Heather Bause Rubinstein (b. 1975, Englewood, NJ; lives and works in New York) presents Provocation, her second solo show with Ruttkowski;68. The Bochum exhibition brings together seven new paintings made during the artist’s return to Düsseldorf in the summer of 2026.

Bause Rubinstein’s abstractions are physical, intuitive, and hard won. There is an urgency to their making, one decision pressing against the next. Broad strokes sweep across the canvas, crossing and overtaking one another; color builds and bleeds into drips, while passages of white paint cover earlier marks and clear space for what comes next. She works by adding and pruning, following one impulse with another but never entirely erasing where she has been, so that each painting keeps a record of its own making. Her abstractions hover at the edge of recognition, giving the eye just enough to find its bearings before pulling certainty away again.

Bause Rubinstein grapples with abstraction itself, and with our human instinct to find something recognizable within it. The gardener sees a garden; the hunter sees a forest; the sailor sees a storm. What we find in a painting inevitably carries something of ourselves. The paintings invite these projections, but refuse to resolve them. Looking becomes an encounter, a negotiation, at times even a confrontation.

For three of the works, that confrontation continues in poetry. Bause Rubinstein’s husband, the poet and critic Raphael Rubinstein, takes on each painting with a poem, shaped by the unusual intimacy of a writer responding to the work of his partner. The poems are not translations. They are ripostes, each provoked by an act of looking.

The painting strikes. The viewer strikes back.

WOMBAT (works and lives in New York, US) presents her second solo exhibition, Rage Like a Blood Filled Egg, with Ruttkowski;68 in Paris.

Wrath wound thru compulsive cycles of consumption and replication. Thorns tear apart and create the carcass ouroboros we’re imprisoned inside of.

The lambs brey intrigue: a promise of a better world vs a perverse delusion. Innocence is a farce produced and consumed too by the vile worm.

Contorted and knotted up in our foul pit we furiously devour seductive myth until we throw up the disgusting expulsion of our own corrosive insides.

We wonder what history has asked us all throughout time: Are Hydra’s ever de/re generating heads the ruthless brutality of capitalist imperialism or our decentralized resistances to oppression and alignments with life?

Revolution repetition stagnation & on & on

For Frieze Sculpture Park 2026, Ruttkowski;68 presents ‘Held’ (2026), a monumental work by Carolina Aguirre (b. 1990, Chile).

Inspired by xenoliths— ‘foreign’ (xeno) ‘stone’ (lith)—Held is a monolithic bronze form that splits in two to reveal a white quartz core: a fragment held within another body. This ‘foreign heart’ both connects the two bronze halves and is held by them. The gesture is tender and precarious; if the halves move apart, the stone could fall.

The quartz was gathered from the artist’s family home in Uruguay, carrying memories of distant homelands and a connection to the Earth. The bronze exterior is weathered, while the inner surfaces are smooth and warm, bearing symbols and scars. Both bronze and rock are forged through fire, but bronze can be reshaped while stone remains fixed. Together, they speak of the delicate relationships that hold us—to one another, to time and place, and the Earth itself.

Carolina Aguirre (b. 1990, Chile) is an Argentinian and British artist based in London. After living in Chile, South Africa, Egypt and Wales, Aguirre graduated with a BA in Graphic Design (Moving Image), Central Saint Martins, and completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art (2023). She is a recipient of the Ali H. Alkazzi Scholarship Award (2021–2023) and the 2022 Kyoto City University of the Arts exchange programme. Solo exhibitions include It Murmurs, Palmer Gallery (London, 2026), Body Takes, Ruttkowski;68 (Düsseldorf, 2025), Seismic Love, Ruttkowski;68 (Paris, 2025), and Remember member ember, Lismore Castle Arts (Ireland, 2024). Notable group exhibitions include Pace Gallery (Berlin), Städtische Galerie Offenburg (Offenburg), Thaddeus Ropac (London), and the Royal Academy of Arts (London).

Carolina Aguirre is represented by Ruttkowski;68.

DÜSSELDORF:

Michael Günzer & Fabian Treiber
Im Gerinne

Until 25.10.2026

Fabian Treiber (b. 1986, lives and works in Stuttgart, DE) and Michael Günzer (b. 1982, lives and works in Ulm, DE) present their first duo exhibition Im Gerinne with Ruttkowski;68 in Düsseldorf.

The exhibition brings together two painters connected less by a shared subject than by a common interest in the conditions under which images acquire meaning. Both work from existing visual worlds – Günzer from photographs and stagings circulating through media, politics, popular culture, and social networks; Treiber from remembered images, everyday spaces, and collective visual memory. Rather than reproducing these sources, both understand painting as a way of testing, transforming, and ultimately rethinking the images from which they begin.

While Günzer examines the performative mechanisms of power by placing public figures in absurd, fragile, or aggressive constellations, Treiber explores the instability of perception. His spaces are structured less by linear perspective than by the logic of visual memory.

The title Im Gerinne refers to the street where Michael Günzer lives, a place that has quietly become part of the artists‘ shared history. The word itself suggests both a location and a process – something shaped through repeated movement rather than fixed definition. In much the same way, the paintings in the exhibition emerge through the reworking of images that already have histories of their own.

If Treiber paints the stages, settings, and spaces left open to projection, Günzer populates them with figures whose presence exposes the absurdities and tensions embedded in contemporary image culture. Together, their works exist in constant conversation, unsettling and reshaping the very images from which they take their point of departure.

NEW YORK:

Matt McCormick
Long Distance Call

Opening reception tonight
Wednesday, September 9, 6-9pm

Matt McCormick (b. 1987, US) presents Long Distance Call, his first solo exhibition with Ruttkowski;68.

Long Distance Call continues Matt McCormick’s practice, which brings together images from disparate sources into contact, newly turning its attention more directly to how those very images arrive here. Pictures rarely reach us intact. Repeated, reproduced, retold, and passed between people and across generations, images hold narrative power and reference that transform based on form or beholder. An event experienced by one becomes a photograph seen by another, a family story is remembered by someone who wasn’t there, or an image is so widely circulated that its origin becomes secondary to everything it has come to represent.

The works in Long Distance Call arise from what happens within that intermediary space of transmission. Images separated by generations, histories, and degrees of experience meet again under different circumstances.

On view through October 17
