In the Parcours sector of Art Basel Basel, curated by Stefanie Hessler, Kiang Malingue and Galerie Bao present Trương Công Tùng's In The Temporary Forms....It Dies Here and Is Born There…

Trương Công Tùng composes a threshold rather than a setting, unfolds as a field of transformations where organic matter and technological fragments circulate without fixity. The garden he proposes is unstable, crossed by multiple durations. Soil, cocoons, humidity, and electrical signals share a common movement.

Rooted in reflections on ecosystems and technological interventions in Vietnam, the work suggests a body in continuous mutation. The gaze moves without stable orientation, attentive to transitions. Here, each element enters an open cycle where disappearance and emergence coexist.

[Acquisition Announcement]

We are proud to share that Trương Công Tùng "The Disoriented Garden… A Breath of Dream…" has officially entered the collection of MUSEION (Bolzano, Italy).

The work’s journey began with the 2023 Southeast Asian Video Production Grant from the Han Nefkens Foundation, who later offered the video component to the museum. Following the exhibition, the MUSEION made a forward-thinking decision to acquire the installation as an inseparable whole, embracing its layered and evolving nature.

Rooted in Đắk Lắk, Trương Công Tùng’s practice unfolds as an ecology of memory and material, with objects gathered over years, shifting across contexts and now finding resonance within a new landscape in South Tyrol.

[EN] The title "Tropic of Cancer" is drawn from Henry Miller’s autobiographical novel, in which he recounts his life in 1930s Paris. In the book, Miller wanders the city, moving through relationships, obsessions, and encounters with both expatriates and locals. The artist relates to these experiences, finding echoes of his own life in Paris.
The novel’s recurring focus on the human body as a site of both pleasure and suffering mirrors the tension between the spiritual and the material. The painting reflects this duality through the image of a merman and a Nāga king, sharing the small, fleeting joys of existence.

[EN] This is a self-portrait of the artist, depicted wearing a mask bearing his own stoic expression. Beneath this mask lies a hidden, crying figure. The title “Et in Arcadia Ego” alludes to the presence of death, often interpreted as death itself declaring, “Even in Arcadia, I am there.” Arcadia, both a real region in ancient Greece and a mythical ideal, represents an idyllic, proto-utopian landscape.

The work functions as a memento mori, reminding us that even in moments of beauty and contentment, memories of sadness and the inevitability of death linger within the artist’s mind. The piece also draws inspiration from the popular internet “Wojak” meme, specifically the image of a crying figure concealed behind a mask of composure.

«How do you recover when history rams into you? Nguyễn Tấn Cương (b.1954) could have chosen a better time and place than being a young graduate of the Saigon School of Fine Arts when the reunification of Vietnam by the communist North invalidated his entire education and censored his inspirations. Thankfully, Cương wasted no time and fifteen years later, was ready to exhibit. His personal creations were an opportunity to revisit his past as an oil cartographer and set decorator. His abstract paintings are not a formal exploration of color and form, but rather the expression of a surveyor conducting an internal assessment. Cương shares a certain earthy familiarity with Tùng, but expresses it through topological precision. Just like the revolutionary theater sets that Cương once designed, his canvases are decors that evoke resilient mental universes. His works are proof that artistic reconstruction is fertile when it takes place ex situ without being ex nihilo.»
