[On view - Artist Focus] Samir Mougas () and Galerie Eric Mouchet are delighted to present ‘Hard Edge, Soft Core’, his first solo exhibition at the gallery in Brussels until July 18, 2026.
➞ Brunch & guided tours: Saturday 6 June from 11 am to 6 pm
Samir Mougas (1980) lives and works in Paris, France. His sculptural practice explores a wide range of aesthetic experiments that oscillate between the use of invented forms and the use of borrowed forms. By appropriating a broad vocabulary that draws as much from biodiversity as from the visual arts or design, his works are conceived within a paradox: thwarting immediate visual appeal to open up a wide range of interpretive possibilities.
Samir Mougas uses assemblage, casting, modeling, resin, ceramics, paint, lacquered cast aluminum, and even automotive paint as tools for formal experimentation open to serendipity—all of which serve as pretexts for the artisanal, non-specialist creation of his works. His explorations blend forms and references that draw on mass cultural phenomena as much as specific technical objects, infusing his exhibitions with vitality.
His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Nîmes Contemporary Art Center (2023), the La Chapelle des Calvairiennes Contemporary Art Center (2018), Dream Community (Taipei), Les Bains-Douches Contemporary Art Center (2013), the Centre Pompidou-Metz (2011), and 40mcube (2009); and group exhibitions such as the Visual Arts Center in Austin (2022), the Frac Normandie Caen (2021), the Villa Datris Foundation (2020), the FRAC Bretagne (Rennes, 2020), the Consello da Cultura Galega (Santiago de Compostela, 2019), La Criée (Rennes, 2018), the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Brussels, 2018), Printemps de Septembre (2018), Glassbox (2017), ZQM (Berlin, 2017), the Palais de Tokyo (2016), Confort Moderne (Poitiers, 2016), and the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial (2015).
