Abdelkader Benchamma
Trees - Melencholia, 2023

Ink and acrylic on paper
110 x 130 cm

A striking work on paper by Abdelkader Benchamma, whose practice is devoted entirely to drawing. Both expansive and immersive, this composition reflects his singular ability to extend the language of drawing beyond the page, creating organic forms that seem to unfold at the threshold of the visible and the invisible.

Exhibition Spotlight — Matisse, 1941–1954 🎨

Focusing on the final years of Henri Matisse’s career, Matisse, 1941–1954 highlights a period of extraordinary freedom and reinvention. Bringing together more than 300 works - including paintings, drawings, illustrated books, textiles, stained glass and gouaches découpées - the exhibition reveals the full breadth of his practice during these decisive years.

At nearly eighty, Matisse developed a new visual language through cut-outs and pure colour, while continuing to place painting at the heart of his work. The exhibition brings together major ensembles from this period, including Jazz, the Intérieurs de Vence, works related to the Chapelle de Vence, monumental panels such as La G***e and Les Acanthes, and an exceptional presentation of the celebrated Blue Nudes.

Presented at the Grand Palais from 24 March to 26 July 2026, the exhibition offers an immersive journey through a late body of work defined by invention, clarity and boundless vitality.

Artist Spotlight - Antonio Saura

Known for his intense painterly language, Antonio Saura remains a major figure in postwar Spanish art.

Working through a restrained palette, often dominated by black and white, he developed a powerful visual vocabulary of distorted figures, portraits and crucifixions. Moving between figuration and abstraction, his work is marked by gesture, tension and repetition.

A co-founder of El Paso in 1957, Saura played a defining role in the renewal of Spanish postwar painting.

Bringing together paintings, sculptures, graphic works, photographs and decorative arts, the exhibition offers a renewed perspective on both celebrated masterpieces and rarely shown works.

In dialogue with this historical perspective, the Petit Palais also presents around ten women artists working in Paris today, whose works revisit the genre of portraiture through contemporary questions of identity, gender and representation.

📍On view from 18 March to 19 July 2026 at the Petit Palais, Paris.

Artist Spotlight - François Morellet 💥

Known for his rigorous geometric language and playful conceptual approach, François Morellet remains a major figure in postwar abstraction.

Working with neon, lines, grids, and systems, he created works that are both formally precise and unexpectedly witty. His practice balanced structure and chance, creating subtle disruptions that continue to challenge our perception of space and order.

As 2026 marks 100 years since his birth, exhibitions celebrating his work are being presented across museums, galleries, and institutions, including François Morellet. 100 pour cent at Centre Pompidou-Metz (3 April–28 September 2026) and a tribute presentation at the Palace of Versailles as part of 100 x Morellet.

Artist Spotlight - Alicja Kwade

Known for her sculptural installations and conceptual rigor, Alicja Kwade questions our perception of time, space, and reality.

Working with materials such as stone, steel, mirrors, and found objects, she creates subtle shifts in balance and symmetry. Her works often appear minimal at first glance, yet they quietly destabilize what we think we see.

Her practice moves between poetry and physics, intuition and structure. A presence that transforms space, both visually and conceptually.
