La Galerie Les filles du calvaire a ouvert ses portes en 1996 dans le Marais dans un bâtiment industriel de 300m2 sur deux niveaux abrités par une grande verrière. Depuis, l’actualité qui nous sature d’images sans laisser de place à la pensée, et la violence qui tient lieu de relations humaines n’ont cessé de renforcer la pertinence de cette décision. Les artistes dont nous montrons les œuvres sont particulièrement en cohérence avec ce choix en proposant des points de vue et des éclairages divers sur le réel inexplicable auquel nous sommes confrontés. Notre programmation convoque tous les champs de l’art contemporain qui se croisent et s’enrichissent (peinture, sculpture, vidéo, photographie et installations), les artistes confirmés ou émergents faisant souvent appel à une écriture plurielle. Elle est politique au sens noble du terme par son exploration obstinée du monde et la recherche de ce qui le fonde. La galerie participe activement à des foires et salons et collabore avec de nombreuses institutions en France et à l’étranger. Elle est à l’origine d’un grand nombre de publications, seule ou en co-production, qui sont un outil privilégié pour la diffusion de la création.

[FOCUS ON] Lore Stessel (born in 1987) is a Belgian artist based in Brussels, whose practice unfolds at the intersection of photography and painting, with the body and movement at its core.

Trained in both disciplines, Lore has developed a singular technique, applying silver gelatin emulsion by hand directly onto canvas. The process lends her images a tactile, almost physical presence, blurring the boundaries between photographic image and painterly surface. Her subjects are dancers, captured away from the stage and outside the conventions of performance, in moments when movement becomes spontaneous and unguarded.

Each work is unique, holding onto the trace of a gesture rather than simply recording it. Through blurred silhouettes, suspended movements and fleeting encounters between bodies, Stessel turns photography into a sensitive memory of movement, revealing the body as a direct and instinctive language of emotion.

[RUE CHAPON] Currently on view a solo exhibition by Zhuo Qi齐倬, at 21 rue Chapon until October 24, 2026.

We Cannot Stop Birds of Omen from Flying Over Our Heads, but Perhaps We Can Prevent Them from Nesting There.

The exhibition brings together three major strands developed by the artist Zhuo Qi in recent years: the Bubble Game series; a large column-shaped installation composed of Mohele and moulds for children’s toys; and the work Balancing Ball. Together, these works create a space situated somewhere between repair, play, ritual, and archaeological fiction. Zhuo Qi does not seek to construct a comprehensive historical narrative. Rather, he brings together fragmentary images, objects drawn from popular traditions, children’s toys, ceramic structures, and interventions in glass, allowing new relationships to emerge from their mutual misunderstandings.

[RUE DES FILLES DU CALVAIRE] Currently on view, “Earth and Sky”, a solo exhibition by S U N G I M L E N G E Y A, at 17 rue des Filles du Calvaire until October 24, 2026.

The works in “Earth and Sky” were conceived in the wake of the passing of the artist’s mother. Faced with this loss, Sungi found herself reflecting not on the finality of death, but on the many ways a life continues. What remains of a person once they are gone? Where does their
presence reside? For the artist, the answer lies not in memory alone, but in influence: the gestures passed down through generations, the habits of making and thinking that quietly shape those who follow. In many ways, this understanding echoes the reflection of Kenyan philosopher John Mbiti, who observed that “the living, the dead, and the unborn are bound together in one continuous chain of existence.” Within this continuum, the life of one person extends outward through the lives of others, carried forward in actions, ideas, and acts of care that continue to shape the world long after the body has passed.

For his new solo exhibition at Les filles du calvaire, Qi Zhuo presents a new body of work exploring the relationships between history, memory and transformation. Through stone, blown glass and found forms, the artist brings together fragments from different temporalities, where repair does not erase absence but gives rise to new meanings. Moving between archaeology, fiction and play, the exhibition invites viewers to reconsider the ways in which objects carry cultural memory and continue to evolve.

Earth and Sky
Exhibition from September 5 to October 24, 2026

Recognised internationally for her minimalist paintings of dark female figures emerging from vast white spaces, Sungi Mlengeya has developed a refined and instantly recognisable visual language. Conceived following the death of her mother, this exhibition marks an intimate turning point for the artist. Rather than questioning the finality of death, the artist focuses on what remains: inherited gestures, thought processes, and creative impulses that quietly shape subsequent generations. Each life thus appears as both a root and an extension, nourished by the past while opening towards the future. The title Earth and Sky reflects this dual movement between grounding and expansion. Negative space, which is central to the artist’s pictorial language, becomes a « sky » here: a field of projection where invisible presences and legacies endure. In this way, Sungi Mlengeya offers a meditation on the continuity of existence, in which life transforms and unfolds within subsequent generations rather than extinguishing itself.

[FOCUS ON] Born from a paper-cutting process inspired by the creations of Hans Christian Andersen, these wall-mounted works by 𝑱𝒖𝒍𝒊𝒂 𝑯𝒂𝒖𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒕 explore symmetry and doubling. Evoking the figure of Harlequin through their diamond motif, they weave a dialogue between faience and textile, where glazes, textures and colour unfold in their full intensity.

Julia Haumont (born in 1991 in France) is a French artist who lives and works in Paris. Drawing on artisanal techniques, she explores the fragile threshold between childhood and adolescence. Her hybrid sculptures combine faience, textiles and glass to create figures and abstract forms where innocence meets desire, delicacy meets strength, and intimacy coexists with quiet unease.
