Have you ever thought about purchasing fine artwork, but weren't sure where to start? The art world can be a little intimidating sometimes. Here's some simple things to consider when you're looking to purchase some fine art for your home, office, or as a gift.
1. Subject Matter: What is your picture of? This sounds like a super simple question, but it's one of the first and most important ones. Most of my clients want to purchase artwork revolving around three things: people, landscapes, or monuments.
2. Size: Think about the space you want to be displaying this work in and visualize what that area would look like with various sizes of artwork. One trick to making a small painting look larger is to choose a subject matter that's more zoomed in. The same works in reverse for larger paintings with a really zoomed out view.
3. How and Where You're Display It: Do you have a specific area? How big is the space? What size of artwork would look good? How do you want to design the space around it? Sometimes thinking about where you'll hang the work might make it easier to answer questions like subject and size.
4. Colors: Going along with how and where you'll hang the work. What colors does the work have in it? Does that match the space you're wanting to display it in? For some, this doesn't matter. For others, it's crucial. There's no right or wrong. You may have a specific space with specific colors in mind. Or you may just want to buy the work that you like and build the space around it.
5. Cost: Once you've got an idea of what you want, think about what you'd be willing to spend. When you're purchasing works of art, you're primarily paying the artist for two things: expertise and time. Although each piece is different, a good artist should have good idea of what their expertise and time is worth, as well as be able to communicate that clearly. Never be afraid to reach out and ask.
