UNGAGED n°14, 2020, acrylic paint on photographic print, Hahnemühle paper. ⠀⠀
This is a sneak preview on a new personal art project I'm currently working on besides my current work as photographer // 24 over painted photographs ready to expose //⠀
Over many years, taking pictures of „birds in cages“ became one (of many) recurrent themes in my photography.⠀
I took pictures of birds where ever I found a good motive, driven by curiosity, fascination and pity, everybody feels when we are watching animals in cages. On birds you can go really closed while taking the picture and watching birds in cages is a very sad thing. They are separated from their natural environment, confined in a too small space, separated from the „outside“ with thin bars. On my travels, „caged birds“ reflected the social, religious and also individual mindset of the people „holding“ the birds.⠀
I had all pictures taken between 2008 - 2020, but I did never really know what to do with it / with UNGAGED I have made the approach to cover the cage bars and blur out the edges and structures partially with paint applied onto the photograph. To me the birds seem a bit more free now and the picture as well is shifting from photograph of captured birds, back into a more unique and floating status, that opens highly motivating doors for my personal work.⠀
